Perspectives Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Peter Alonso knocking on major leagues

SORPRESA, Ariz. - One of the most important questions when looking at the MLB 2019 season is what role the best prospects in the game will play in their parent clubs.

Judging by his performances in the Arizona Fall League, and the league's annual Fall All-Star Game, third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays and first baseman Peter Alonso of the New York Mets they should open the season on a major league list. .

Both young players did some amazing things on Saturday night at the annual exhibition event, which was Won by the West All-Stars 7-6 in a simple final by the recipient of the Kansas City Royals, Meibrys Viloria.

Guerrero, 19, showed some of the skills that made him the undisputed number one prospect in the minors. In the fifth inning, he hit a double on the left field wall that had an exit speed of 117 mph.

To put it in perspective, a total of 11 batters in the majors last season. hit a ball with an exit speed of 117 mph or more. There are 11 players ... ALL THE SEASON.

It's almost funny how good Guerrero was last season. The Hall of Famer son of 2018 hit a combined total of .381 / .437 / .636 with 20 homers in four different levels of the minor leagues. However, the Jays chose not to promote it to the elders. It seems he's going to make the decision even more difficult this spring, especially since he's second in the AFL with a .393 average.

Guerrero also walked, made a mistake in the ninth inning and scored the equalizer in a two-out triple from San Diego Padres outfielder Buddy Reed.

Reed then scored the winning race in Viloria's single was named MVP of the game.

At the beginning of the game, it seemed that Alonso could be the favorite for the prize.

In his first at-bats, Alonso, 23, faced the Blue Jays' right-hander, Nate Pearson, who turned on the stadium's radar gun by hitting 103 mph several times with his fastball, and exceeding 104.

(The skeptic might wonder if the weapon I could have been running a little hot in an effort to increase some rumors. However, a scout in attendance confirmed that 104 was really legitimate.)

Facing one of those 103 mph fastballs, Alonso changed the tables by hitting a homer to center field that gave the East an early 1-0 lead.

Alonso was not only impressive with his bat. For the second day in a row, he also showed some slippery gloves.

After Guerrero doubled in the fifth and moved to third in an agitated pitch from the outfield, the Eastern squad brought the infield in an effort to prevent the run from scoring. The next hitter, Cavan Biggio, of the Jays, hit a scorer that Alonso somehow managed to pick up in the short jump and tag first before Guerrero could advance.

Alonso made a similar move the day before at Scottsdale Stadium when he threw himself into a short jump and hit the bag in front of the runner. If the reason the Mets did not call him this season was because he needed to work on his defense, that excuse no longer seems to fly.

The Mets with Alonso and the Blue Jays with Guerrero have the keys to how much the best prospects in the big leagues will contribute this season. His concerns about the time of service were one of the main topics of discussion this weekend in the First Pitch Arizona Conference put by people in Baseball headquarters.

In the first fantasy drafts of 2019 this weekend, Guerrero was captured in the second round, around number 20 in general, despite not playing one day in the majors and not having the guarantee that he will be on the list of Blue Jays.

The prevailing opinion is that he will spend the first two weeks in the minors, so the Jays will have him under contract for an additional year and then they will promote him to assume the position of starter in third base. Undoubtedly, he has shown that he has little left to play by playing against minor league pitchers.

The same can be said of Alonso, whose fielding was the most pleasant surprise for me on this trip. His bat no doubt seems to play in New York.

The future certainly looks bright for these two rising stars.

(More on some of the other AFL prospects to come ...)
