Our Electionland project is tracking voting problems and is getting results

On Tuesday, more than 250 reporters from more than 125 newsrooms will work together to achieve a goal. We are all part of Electionland, a collaborative journalism project dedicated to identifying problems with access to the ballot.

We have already seen that our coverage makes the difference. Suggestions sent to local partners have produced stories that pressured officials to solve problems and help people vote more easily.

Our partners in the Houston Chronicle I take An Electionland council on voter registration issues at Prairie View A & M, a historically black university in Waller County. Administrative errors prevented hundreds of registered voters from voting at the polling place on campus. In addition, the county was asking them to fill out forms to remedy the problem: a step advocates say could confuse students and prevent them from voting.

Meanwhile, as the Chronicle also documented, a member of the Democratic campaign complaining about the problem was briefly stopped After taking a picture of the county clerk.

After all the coverage, the office of the Texas secretary of state intervened and allowed students to vote on campus without completing additional documents.

An advice that we send to the chronicle as well. brought about The action before the newspaper had the opportunity to publish a story. A voter who had been expelled from a polling place because she wore a T-shirt with the logo of a progressive group from Texas came to Electionland. She told us that the Harris County clerk's office had sent a memo to election workers who selected three progressive groups to remove them from the polls, including hers.

We shared the memo with the Chronicle, which then called the secretary's office. Soon after, the county rescinded the memo. The Texas Secretary of State's office also intervened later and advised the county against the ban.

We also received a lot of advice on Resistbot, a text message service that reminds voters of their polling place and early voting deadlines. While Florida counties are not required to keep polling places open on the Sunday before the election, many do so. After passing the tip to a WLRN reporter in Florida, he tweeted in Resistbot asking the organization to correct the error. He did so, sending updated texts to voters in the affected areas.

During the last few weeks, we received a lot of advice on voter intimidation, which leads to stories from partners across the country. In Dallas County, Texas, we hear about the insults and interrogation of voters waiting in line to vote. We contacted the county elections director, who said it was the The worst he has seen in decades..

Our partners at The Dallas Morning News tracing with reports in the field, shedding new light on the scenes of often confrontational but totally legal election scenes outside the polling places in the county.

With full early voting, we are now receiving hundreds of tips per day, but we have been addressing the voting problems and perfecting our reporting strategy for months. During the primary for Governor of New York in New York in September, tracked a tip that the Housing Authority of New York City instructed hundreds of residents in a Coney Island building to stay in their homes for a routine inspection on Election Day. After a reporter from ProPublica approached the agency, a spokesman said it was an oversight and promised not to schedule inspections on election day.

Our partners in Bklyner and WNYC also reported in an official New York City voter guide that incorrectly states that offenders can vote only after parole. After the story, the agency updated its website and even edited a blog post two years before that included the outdated information.

We also suffocated a rumor that the Immigration and Customs Service planned to patrol the polling places. We explained What to do if you are on Georgia's "exact match" list. And we provided a state-by-state guide to navigate the complicated voting laws on election day.

We hope that many of the problems we have seen re-emerge on Election Day. If you experience or witness something, let us know:
