North Korea threatens more nuclear work without relief of sanctions
SEOUL: North Korea warned on Friday it could revive a policy aimed at strengthening its nuclear arsenal if the United States does not lift the sanctions, indicating it will not give up further concessions in nuclear negotiations with the United States.
The comments came as the friction has grown. between South Korea and the US on how to use economic pressure in the effort to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. South Korean President Moon Jae-in said economic development could provide an incentive for the North to disarm, while Washington said Pyongyang should dismantle its nuclear weapons before sanctions are lifted.
"If the US continues to behave arrogantly without showing any change in its position," North Korea can resume the "increase of nuclear forces," the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued by your state news agency.
North Korea has repeatedly demanded that the United States lift sanctions, saying it has already made significant concessions, including the dismantling of a missile launch site and a nuclear weapons test facility.
Although North Korea's declaration does not contain a threat to abandon nuclear talks with the United States, the comment seems to point to more concessions in talks next week in the United States between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart, former intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol.
South Korea has offered to provide financial and economic assistance to the North once sanctions are lifted. Mr. Moon during his three summits with Mr. Kim this year pledged assistance from South Korea to rebuild the roads and railroads of North Korea, most recently in September, when the leaders of the major conglomerates of South Korea, including Lee Jae-yong of Samsung, accompanied Mr. Moon to Pyongyang.
North Korea has been frustrated by the refusal of the United States. UU To allow Seoul to provide economic aid to the North, a feeling that was repeated in Friday's statement.
The sanctions are forcing South Korea to adjust how quickly the two Koreas improve relations at the pace of the nuclear negotiations of the United States and North Korea, the statement said.
Meanwhile, US diplomats have been working to resume talks with their North Korean counterparts, in part to organize a second Trump-Kim summit, a meeting the two sides hope will boost stalled nuclear negotiations.
Mr. Pompeo visited Pyongyang last month when he was granted a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Pompeo said the meeting was positive and expressed confidence in efforts to persuade Pyongyang to dismantle its nuclear weapons.
