No. 1 Kansas keeps out the No. 10 Michigan State 92-87 in the first game

Quentin Grimes and Dedric Lawson of Kansas made a big impression on Tuesday night.

They produced basket after basket, great play after great play. If they continue to play this way, the number 1 of Kansas could keep abreast of the world of college basketball.

Grimes scored 21 points in his debut in college and Lawson added 20 points in his first game with the Jayhawks, helping Kansas Stymie, Michigan State's last charge for a 92-87 victory in the season-opening Classic Championship. .

"He (Grimes) came out with a free mind and played his game," Lawson said. "He was the best player in our team tonight."

Grimes certainly played well.

Lawson also made a case, finishing with 14 rebounds and six assists after missing out last season after moving from Memphis.

Together, the tag team stole the program at one of the top college basketball events. Kansas achieved its third consecutive win in the Classic and improved to 15-1 in starters under coach Bill Self: in one night, the Jayhawks were in control almost all the way.

They just fought to deliver the coup de grace.

"Obviously, we have to learn to close games," said Self.

Kansas led up to 17 in the first half after weathering an early burst of 3 points from the state of Michigan. The Jayhawks never lost in the second half.

But in a game that pitted two of the pre-season favorites at the Power Five conference, the Spartans made the ending as intriguing as expected.

They cut a 10-point deficit to 90-87 when Kyle Ahrens made a three-pointer with 34 seconds left and could have reached both after Kansas's Devon Dotson missed one of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining .

Then Cassius Watson missed a layup, Kansas took the rebound and Grimes made 1 of 2 free throws to seal it.

The state of Michigan was led by Joshua Langford with 18 points and Kenny Goins, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

"I learned something about my team tonight," said Spartans coach Tom Izzo. "We played well in the second half and did some good things, but you do not count half-games."

LARGE PICTURE

Kansas: The Jayhawks showed why they won first place. They dominated the post, used 3-point shots to get away and finally found a way to close the energetic Spartans.

State of Michigan: The late surge of the Spartans showed that they are able to come face to face against the best teams in the nation. But this one escaped them due to bad shots and general careless play, things that must be cleaned up quickly.

They said it

Kansas: "The people in his camp told me he is a player and he likes it when the lights are on him," said Self, referring to Grimes. "He was definitely a player tonight."

State of Michigan: "I'm a little disappointed with our greats," said Izzo. "We will take more positives from this than the negatives, this was good for us."

UNTIL NEXT TIME

Kansas has a five-day break before opening its home calendar against Vermont on Monday.

The traditionally discouraging non-conference of Michigan State continues Sunday when the champion of the regular season of Atlantic Sun, Florida Gulf Coast, visits East Lansing on Sunday.
