Does Nintendo come to a classroom near you?
The Game Institute and Nintendo have teamed up to take Nintendo Labo to elementary schools with the hope of reinforcing communication, creativity and critical thinking.
Nintendo is probably the best known name in games, and now they are putting their new device to good use in the classroom, helping children learn the art of science and design.
Nintendo is partnering with the Institute of Play, a nonprofit organization based in New York that seeks to "develop new models of learning and commitment, committed to empowering young people to move towards a promising future." The organization says that learning through video games could be the way of the future, and they are testing that theory in a pilot program that uses games to help children learn.

For its part, Nintendo is providing hundreds of its Labo kits to students; It is a peculiar cardboard construction set that can be used in collaboration with the Switch consoles. Both the Switch and the variety kit are delivered free of charge in the pilot program, which includes eleven elementary schools in the New York area. The next step: run a five-month program starting this month in 100 schools across the country, hoping to reinforce communication, creativity and critical thinking. The executive co-director of the Institute, Ariana Shapiro, says that the moment could not be better. "It allows children to really explore creativity and collaborative problem solving in ways that we just have not seen much with technology," he explained in a recent test of the new curriculum in New York.
The Institute and Nintendo are now building a comprehensive curriculum on accessories based on the cardboard of the Labo, focusing on learning "STEAM": science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The program is expected to reach two thousand students, from 8 to 11 years old, by the end of next year. So, if Mario and Luigi appear in their son's classroom in the near future, do not worry, it's all educational!
