Newt Gingrich: Stop the caravan and build the wall to keep the drugs lethal and save lives
A perfect storm is brewing in the southern hemisphere and heading north to the United States.
Heroin, fentanyl and other opioids are already seeping through the southern border of the United States and this infiltration is one of the three elements that will feed the perfect storm. Every day, 115 Americans die from an overdose of opioids and contaminated drugs that pass through our border with Mexico.
The second element is MS-13, the brutal gang that is a drug courier service used by Mexican drug cartels for the distribution of these drugs within the United States.
When these two elements are mixed with the third element: the caravan of several thousand people, mostly menIn search of breaking our southern border, it completes a toxic combination that leads to a perfect storm.
Members of the MS-13 gang have already been found in mass migration (although some have claimed that they are is no longer affiliated with the gang). It is not difficult to detect them with their MS-13 tattoos. It's just a small leap in logic that members of the MS-13 gang will use the caravan as a cover to increase their drug and human trafficking operations.
This combination magnifies the threat to the national security of the United States. A border wall is more necessary than ever.
Securing our border should not be the partisan problem that some have made of it. Saving the lives of our children from the scourge of deadly drugs is not a partisan issue.
Imagine that an airplane crashes every day and kills 115 passengers. This would be a national emergency that would eclipse partisanship. The death of 115 Americans by overdose every day should also eclipse partisanship.
Like Marlon Miller of the Department of Homeland Security. explained for the National Security Committee of the House of Representatives on June 19, "a significant amount of heroin of Mexican origin, and fentanyl of Chinese origin that transits through Mexico ... is smuggled across the border shared with Mexico through the terrestrial border entry ports ".
According to the San Diego Union-TribuneIn March 2017, 18 kilograms of fentanyl hidden in a pickup truck were seized at a checkpoint in Sonora, California. Later that year, another semi-trailer was seized traveling to Tijuana from Mexico City with 30,000 pills of fentanyl and 63 kilos of powder containing the drug.
The US Customs and Border Protection Service seized 355 kilograms of fentanyl in fiscal year 2017 only at San Diego ports of entry. In April, soldiers from the state of Nebraska seized 118 pounds of fentanyl, enough to kill more than 26 million people, during a routine traffic stop.
To have lasting effects against the opioid crisis, we must cut the supply chain, and this means securing our borders. But it's not just the drug that we need to stop. The criminals who control this drug trafficking are some of the worst and most brutal gang members that have arrived in our country.
The MS-13 and the drug cartels are formed by violent criminals who do not strive to achieve the American dream, but try to kill it.
It is widely reported that members of these gangs rape, decapitate and bury their victims. These gangs move to a neighborhood or city and take control. They hook their victims to drugs and make them come back for more.
MS-13 has approximately 10,000 members in at least 42 states and the District of Columbia, according to the most current FBI estimates. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has even called for the gang to be labeled as a terrorist group, and polls suggest that the American public supports this reclassification.
Of course, securing the border alone will not solve the opioid crisis. This is the reason why President Trump recently took an important step in signing the SUPPORT Act for patients and communities. This is a bipartisan law that passed the Senate. 99-1.
The legislation adopts a multifaceted approach that is necessary to solve this crisis, which deals with treatment and recovery, interdiction and dissuasion.
However, securing our border remains the most important step we can take to ensure that illicit opioids never enter our communities in the first place.
I'm not talking about closing immigration completely for all refugees, migrant workers and others who try to immigrate legally. In fact, I have defended the legislation to welcome immigrants who are so hardworking and respectful of the law.
I'm talking about keeping away gang members and criminals who want to destroy lives and whole communities. If we take this issue seriously, we must stop talking about the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) and begin to secure the border.
We need to stop the caravan. We need to build the wall.
