New publication in 'Nature Nanotechnology' on the manipulation of magnetic atoms


After having carried out an experiment in which they managed to measure and manipulate the hyperfine coupling of isolated magnetic atoms in a surface, a group of scientists - of which a CONICET researcher participates (Argentina) -, made a new advance. In an article published today in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, a new technique is shown that allows controlling the magnetism of an isolated copper atom. This technology could use, in the not too distant future, atomic nuclei to store and process information.



Nuclear polarization of electrically controlled isolated atoms is the title of the work, which was carried out collaboratively by experimental and theoretical physicists from the United States, Korea, Argentina, Portugal, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Spain. The CONICET deputy researcher at the Institute of Modeling and Technological Innovation (IMIT, CONICET - UNNE) and professor in the Faculty of Exact, Natural and Surveying Sciences of the UNNE, Alejandro Ferrón was one of the responsible for the theoretical development.



The previous work, which allowed the realization of the experiment described in this last work, was published in October in the journal Science. At that stage, the researchers had carried out an experiment that consisted of placing iron and titanium atoms on a double layer of magnesium oxide, deposited on silver, using a tunneling microscope, a complex equipment that is known as STM for its acronym in English (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) and combining it with electronic spin resonance techniques, called ESR by Electron Spin Resonance to detect and manipulate the hyperfine coupling.

"This new work goes far beyond the tests that allowed detecting the hyperfine coupling. In this opportunity, we worked with copper atoms and applied the technique to move the nuclear spin, that is, the intrinsic angular momentum that particles like electrons and atomic nuclei have. In this last article we show that it is possible to control the magnetism of a single nucleus by performing a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiment in one atom at a time, "explains Ferrón. As in the previous stage, the CONICET researcher was one of those in charge of analyzing and explaining the results obtained in the laboratory.



In this experiment it was possible to polarize the nuclear spins of individual copper atoms on a surface, through the STM-ESR technique. Using an electric current they were able to transfer the magnetic orientation of the tip of the STM to the nucleus of the copper atom thanks to the hyperfine coupling between electronic spin and nuclear spin.



Both works, published in two of the most important scientific journals worldwide, open a new field for the development of nanostructures and will have applications for the development of quantum technologies, which are projected as the next revolution in the field of information technology.
