NASA's Parker spacecraft makes the first approach to the sun
A NASA spacecraft has made its first approach to the sun, only two and a half months after takeoff.
The Parker solar probe flew a distance of 15 million miles (24 million kilometers) from the surface of the sun on Monday night. Its speed exceeded 213,000 mph (342,000 kph) in relation to the sun, as it penetrated the outer solar atmosphere, or corona.
No spaceship has come so close to our star.
NASA will not reestablish contact until Parker is far enough from the sun to avoid radio interference. Nicola Fox, from NASA, says scientists "can not wait to get the data." The observations could unlock some of the mysteries of the sun.
Assuming the hard solar survives ambient, the ship will make 23 even closer approximations in the next seven years. The next is in April.
