The political novice Sharice Davids, member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, won the victory in Kansas and would be the first Native American Congresswoman of the state, and is one of the two elected. Davids will also become the first openly LGBT congress of the Sunflower State representative. Ilhan Omar, an American Somali, also won a resounding victory in Minnesota. She and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan also made history as the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
"We have the opportunity to re-establish expectations about what people think when they think of Kansas," Davids said in his victory speech. "We know that there are many of us who welcome everyone, we see everyone and we know that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed."
Voters in Virginia, New Jersey and Florida were among those who contributed to a historic choice, choosing at least eight candidates for the first time for the Congress. Many of the winners for the first time, including Davids, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Donna Shalala of Florida, helped to alter the political order in the districts where the Republicans had held seats.
