Davids will also become the first openly LGBT congress of the Sunflower State representative. Ilhan Omar, an American Somali, also won a resounding victory in Minnesota. She and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan also made history as the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

"We have the opportunity to re-establish expectations about what people think when they think of Kansas," Davids said in his victory speech. "We know that there are many of us who welcome everyone, we see everyone and we know that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed."

Voters in Virginia, New Jersey and Florida were among those who contributed to a historic choice, choosing at least eight candidates for the first time for the Congress.
