Milton throws 3 touchdowns, No. 9 UCF keeps out of Temple 52-40
No. 9 UCF only knows one way to answer questions about your position among the elite teams in college football: keep winning.
The defending champions of the American Athletic Conference remained undefeated on Thursday night, retiring late from Temple for a 52-40 victory that extended the nation's longest winning streak and gave the Knights (8-0, 5-0). ) the exclusive possession of the first place in the AAC Eastern Division.
Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame are just other unbeaten teams in the Football Bowl subdivision. They are among the first candidates in the race for positions in the four University Football Playoff teams, while UCF remains a great player despite a brilliant record dating back to last season.
"Now I'm not even worried about that," coach Josh Heupel said. "Our job is to go 1-0 every week ... If you do that, you probably deserve to go play for something special at the end of the year."
McKenzie Milton threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Greg McCrae ran for 188 yards and a TD, and the Knights' defense forced two turnovers and kept Temple in six points after halftime.
Anthony Russo completed 31 of 52 passes for 444 yards and four touchdowns for Temple (5-4, 4-1), who had a three-game winning streak despite winning 670 yards on a night the teams combined to win exactly 1,300.
Taj McGowan scored in 1 and 10-yard runs for UCF, the latter finished a long trip that put the Knights 49-40 after Temple (5-4, 4-1) almost recovered to tie.
Milton, returning to the lineup after missing a match for an undisclosed injury, finished 17 of 33 with an interception. Dredrick Snelson scored on a 19-yard reception and Michael Colubiale had TD catches of 9 and 19 yards.
Ventell Bryant had seven receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Owls. Russo completed the passes for 11 different receivers, including Branden Mack and Randle Jones, who scored while building a halftime 34-28 that lasted less than a minute until the third quarter.
UCF took an advantage of 42-34 in the fourth quarter and stopped a possible conversion of two points before retiring forever.
"At halftime, the children were calm, they went out and kept playing," Heupel said. "I told them that at halftime the champions love to play in environments like this, in situations like this."
RANKING CFP
In addition to staying on top of the Eastern Division classification, UCF continued on its way to being part of the discussion about which teams deserve to be part of this year's PPC.
The Knights, who were denied a place in the playoffs a year ago, despite finishing as the only undefeated team in the FBS, were 12th in the initial ranking of CFP published this week.
A lot of offense
Only in the first half, the teams combined for 808 yards (510 passes and 298 runs), with Russo pitching for 277 and three touchdowns and Milton countering with 233 yards and two touchdowns. Both quarterbacks had a career TD in the second quarter, and Russo scored a 5-yard run in a fake field goal game.
THE TAKEAWAY
Temple: The Owls are 5-2 since Russo took over as quarterback after losing to Villanova and Buffalo to start the season. Armstead returned from missing two games with an ankle injury, immediately making his presence felt with a 33-yard burst on the first play from the start. The senior runner finished with 142 yards on 27 carries.
UCF: Milton had another great night, however, the Knights kept alive the longest winning streak in the nation by running for 318 yards and doing a good defensive job to keep Temple out of the end zone in the second half.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE SURVEY
One of the blows to the success of UCF is the strength of the Knights' calendar. Temple is the only team that defending AAC champions have won this season that currently has a winning record. With the Owls entering Thursday night as double-digit losers, the Knights will need outside help to move forward.
UNTIL NEXT TIME
Temple: in Houston, November 10.
UCF: Stay at home against the Navy, November 10.
