MetOp-C, ready for the big day
MetOp-C, ready for the big day
With a view to the launch, scheduled for November 7, the last meteorological satellite MetOp has already moved to the launch pad and is aboard the Soyuz rocket for its trip to space from French Guiana.
MetOp-C is the latest addition to the MetOp family of satellites, after MetOp-A and MetOp-B, launched in 2006 and 2012, respectively.
The sequential launch of these satellites guarantees the continuous observation of a series of atmospheric variables, such as temperature, humidity, trace gases, ozone and wind speed in the ocean.
These data are used mainly for the numerical weather prediction, which is the basis of our weather forecasts. Recent studies show that MetOp-A and MetOp-B have already reduced the number of errors in one-day forecasts by up to 27%.
All the satellites have been developed by ESA under a collaboration agreement with Eumetsat for the space segment of its polar system. It is also the contribution of Europe to the multi-satellite system shared with the US administration NOAA.

Although each successive satellite is expected to take over from its predecessor, its extraordinary quality has allowed MEtOp-A and MetOp-B to continue operating at full capacity.
After the launch and commissioning of MetOp-C, Eumetsat will have three satellites in the same orbit, with a separation of 120 °. This will further benefit the weather forecasts.
MetOp-C has been in the Kuru European Spaceport for several months, while preparing himself with all the care for the launch and his life in space.
As Stéfane Carlier, head of ESA's MetOp-C project, points out: "MetOp is a large satellite that carries a set of instruments. To reach this moment it has been necessary for ESA, Eumetsat, Airbus Defense and Space and the instrument suppliers to make a great effort ".
"We had to say goodbye when the satellite was sealed in the Soyuz rocket cap and moved to the launch pad."
"Although the rocket will be in the hands of Arianespace for the launch, ESA will also play an important role at that time, especially with the staff present in Kurú for the countdown and the teams from the German operations center, responsible for the first days in orbit of the mission, which will be critical. "
"After takeoff, the MetOp-C property will be transferred to Eumetsat."
MetOp-C will take off on November 7 at 00:47 GMT (01:47 CET), or on November 6 at 9:47 pm local time. (Source: ESA)
