Maryland shoots 2 coaches involved in McNair's treatment
The consequences at the University of Maryland following the death of Jordan McNair continued with the dismissal of two coaches involved in the player's treatment after he collapsed on the practice field at the end of May.
The head coach, DJ Durkin, was fired last week after being reinstated from the administrative license paid for one day.
Maryland has not formally announced the dismissal of the two coaches who were on paid leave, and has never released their names. However, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press in August that athletic trainer Wes Robinson and athletic training director Steve Nordwall had been suspended after McNair's death.
Sports department spokesman Dustin Semonavick said Wednesday that "instructors who were previously on administrative leave no longer work at the university."
Robinson and Nordwall were suspended while the school opened an external investigation into the death of McNair, an offensive lineman who was defeated by heat and exhaustion on May 29 and died on June 13.
Rick Court, the head of strength and conditioning, resigned in August.
Since the death of McNair, the school has had several shameful mistakes in efforts to address the mistakes made.
The university initiated independent investigations on its treatment in the scene and the culture of the program. The McNair management report determined that he was not given the necessary help and that the trainers waited too long to contact emergency medical personnel.
Dr. Rod Walters, a former college sports coach and sports medicine consultant who led the investigation, said it had been more than an hour and a half between the time McNair collapsed and the departure of the campus ambulance.
Maryland athletic director Damon Evans acknowledged in August that the training staff did not provide proper treatment to McNair, a 19-year-old student. The president of the university, Wallace Loh, visited McNair's parents to offer a personal apology for how the situation was handled.
Durkin was put on leave in August. In August, McNair's parents' attorney asked for Durkin to be fired and reiterated that assertion during a press conference that began a couple of hours after the announcement of the meeting.
Hassan Murphy, of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy, said the decision to hold Durkin was "insensitive and indefensible" and could be part of future legal actions.
A series of personnel movements have recently transpired.
Based on a report on the culture of the program, the board of regents of the University System of Maryland recommended the reincorporation of the coach. Durkin returned to work on October 31, but the violent reaction of students, players and politicians in the state prompted Loh to dismiss Durkin just over 24 hours after his return. One day after Durkin's dismissal, board chairman James Brady resigned. McNair's parents are considering taking legal action against the school.
Interim coach Matt Canada has been leading the team this season, although his long-term future is unclear. Maryland has a 5-4 record in Saturday's game in Indiana.
