The British government scientific research vessel James Cook recently set out on an expedition during which a new automated climate data collection system will be tested. If successful, the new technology could help in the future to improve long-term European weather forecasts.
The team of Darren Rayner, of the British National Oceanography Center (NOC), will be on board to obtain data from the set of instruments, collectively known as the RAPID set, deployed in the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, the data of these instruments are collected by an oceanographic vessel every 18 months.
The scientific instruments that make up the RAPID set are deployed in "moorings", cables that extend from an anchor in the ocean floor, sometimes more than 5 kilometers deep, to just below the surface of the sea. A new unit, developed at the NOC laboratories in Southampton and Liverpool, will be added to one of these moorings to collect data from all the instruments connected to the cable and then transmit them using sound signals to a marine robot on the surface of the sea, which In turn, it will send satellite data to scientists at the NOC.

This new system will allow NOC scientists to gather data that could in the future help improve seasonal weather forecasts for Europe.
The system has successfully completed a short underwater test at 600 meters depth, but an 18 month deployment at 4,000 meters depth is a much more difficult test, as Rayner notes.
