Jessica Tarlov: the Democrats scored victories on Tuesday night because we voted for our values

Actually, I was on the Fox News Channel on Election night when the Channel Decision Board called the House of Representatives for the Democrats. What a fortuitous moment!

Presenter Martha MacCallum asked me how I felt and "I'm so relieved" it flew out of my mouth.

The relief was the overwhelming feeling I heard from my fellow Democrats about the results of midterm elections on Tuesday. As in 2016, the exit polls seemed good to us: medical care was the number one problem for miles and Democrats have led the issue with double-digit figures for months.

Weapons were the fourth most important issue, another winner of my party.

Trump's approval numbers with women were terrible: only 39 percent of women gave him a positive approval rating and 60 percent of women gave him a disapproval rating. Three-quarters of voters 18-29 broke for Democrats on Tuesday night with more than one million new entrants in that age range.

Almost half of the voters thought that Trump's immigration policies were too harsh and that the new tax law had no impact on his personal finances.

It seems the realization of a good night. But history has told us that we must be cautious and rightly so, since we end up losing more seats in the Senate than planned and very emotional government careers in Florida and Ohio. Even though Wednesday was kept in Tester's seat in Montana, the Senate was covered in silver, losing three of our red state senators was a hard pill to swallow.

Despite those losses, which are hard to bear, the Democrats achieved a tremendous amount last night. We changed at least 29 seats in the House of Representatives, seven seats of governors, one seat in the Senate, four super specialties of the Republican Party in state legislatures, and 330 amazing state legislative seats and three seats in the state Supreme Court.

We did it by campaigning about our values of equality and diversity. Just look who we choose:

  • The first African-American women to represent Massachusetts and Connecticut in Congress
  • The first Muslim women to serve in the house.
  • The first Latinas in the Texas house
  • The first Native American women in the house.
  • The first Native American woman elected statewide in Minnesota
  • The first openly gay governor elected in the country.

Since the election of Trump, thousands of stories have been written about the political mobilization of women, whether they run for office, get involved locally, march, bank by phone or even simply disguise their babies as the Judge of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg, also known as "RBG" for Halloween.

Unlike in 2016, female voters did not disappoint us on election day. White women were evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, while 55 percent of them had supported Trump in 2016. And, overall, 59 percent of women supported Democrats. And they propelled a series of candidates for higher positions.

Nineteen of our more than 29 seats in the House of Representatives are occupied by women. And we expanded the number of female Democratic governors from two to at least six with wins from Laura Kelly of Kansas, Janet Mills of Maine, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico.

Trump's backing surely helped in key Senate races like Indiana and Missouri. That is undeniable. But one should also bear in mind that at least 32 candidates backed by Trump lost last night. That is not a small number.

The leading Democratic figures have been telling us for months what was at stake on Tuesday and the Democrats showed up to ensure that social security is safe, that Medicare is safe, that the ACA is safe and that there will be no more tax cuts of one percent.

Now we will have a better chance to redistribute the districts fairly. Voters in six states approved proposals to protect victims of crime. One and a half million Floridians who were convicted of crimes will now have their right to a restored vote. The minimum wage is rising in Arkansas and Missouri. Three states expanded Medicaid. The legalization of marijuana continues throughout the country.

We voted our values on Tuesday and it was worth it. Rest assured that we will continue fighting for the next two years until we recover 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as well.
