Jason Chaffetz: If the midterm elections give the Democrats a majority in the House, the far left will preside over the key committees

Maxine Waters of California in Financial Services; Representative Adam Schiff of California in Intelligence; and the representative Jerrold Nadler in the judiciary.
None of these members of the House of Representatives represents views of the center-left. These potential presidents bring a radical left agenda to their potential positions.
As a former committee chair, I won a deck after only six years in the House because Republicans have a very different process to elect committee chairs than Democrats. On the Republican side, with few exceptions, presidents only serve for six years. They are elected by a steering committee based on merit. As a result, Republicans can take advantage of young talents.
The Democrats, on the other hand, simply deliver the chairs of the committees based on seniority. There is no deadline, so presidencies do not open very often. As a result, Democrats are not necessarily choosing the most talented or qualified members, nor the most relevant people for the political moment.
More than once I was contacted by young, talented and energetic colleagues on the other side of the aisle who were deflated by the reality that they would have to stay in Congress for decades before they ever had a chance to lead. Rarely did they last so long.
These democrats would lose the elections because their center-left views were always vulnerable to the swing of the political pendulum, or they would run for offices where they could really make a difference. Meanwhile, the most extreme candidates from the safest Democratic districts are always waiting behind the scenes.
Take, for example, the Financial Services Committee, which oversees the banking and insurance industries, Wall Street and housing issues. Do Americans want to see stability in these reversed issues? Representative Waters is unequivocal about her intention to reverse Trump's economic agenda.

He was one of the first supporters of the Consumer Financial Protection Office, a powerful agency designed by Democrats to operate with unlimited power and without congressional oversight.
The most significant thing is that Waters' opinions are very far from the mainstream.
Waters has advocated harassment against officials of the Trump administration, saying to his supporters in the summer: "If you see someone from that Cabinet (Trump) in a restaurant, in a department store, in a gas station, you go out and create a crowd, and you press them, and you tell them that you are no longer welcome, in nowhere ".
Waters also called for "a 24/7 impeachment hearing" against President Trump.
Waters is not the only potential president whose opinions can scare American voters.
Representative Schiff, known for the allegedly prolific leak of Intelligence Committee investigations, is in line to head that committee. In addition to potentially endangering national security, he has fought against transparency, fighting instead to retain US public documents that could be politically damaging to the Obama administration.
Then there's Representative Nadler, who will head the Judiciary Committee if the Democrats gain control of the House. Nadler has been frank about his priorities. He supports open borders and opposes security measures such as the border wall, an issue that falls directly under the jurisdiction of the Judiciary Committee.
Nadler has said that under his leadership, impeachment proceedings against President Trump and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh will take precedence in the Judiciary Committee.
These examples show that a vote for a moderate Democrat in a swing district will not take Congress to the center, but will cause the body to turn left. Not because the numbers will overwhelm, but because the leadership will be overwhelmingly radical.
