Irving scores on 28, Celtics beat Bucks 117-113
The Boston Celtics came out and stayed there as they knocked down the unbeaten NBA with a barrage of 3-pointers.
The Celtics set a franchise record for triples with 24 in the 117-113 victory over the Bucks on Thursday night, giving Milwaukee its first loss of the season.
"We had a lot of open looks, we took what they gave us," said Gordon Hayward, who scored three triples while scoring a season record of 18. "Those are great shots for us, we have to be able to hit them."
Kyrie Irving led Boston with 28 points, including six of 3 points when the Celtics broke the club record of 19 and fell short of the NBA record.
Al Horford also scored 18, hitting four from beyond the goal, and Marcus Morris made five triples to finish with 17 points.
"It was probably a little more than we wanted to shoot, but those were the shots there were," said Horford, who also led the Celtics with eight assists. "We definitely want to be better, but we did a good job, I felt we moved the ball well, it was encouraging to see it."
Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the lineup after missing a game while in the NBA concussion protocol and led Milwaukee with 33 points and 11 rebounds.
Antetokounmpo helped lead the Bucks to a 62-22 lead in points in the paint, but it was not enough for Milwaukee to get past Boston's outside shots.
"We were all shooting very well," Morris said. "We were just knocking them down and our boys got hot."
Milwaukee, the last undefeated team left in the NBA after beating Toronto on Monday night, fell short after a furious rally in the fourth quarter.
Down the 15th, entering the final period, the Bucks opened in a 12-0 run and were within a point in the final minute, but the Celtics stayed in their fourth straight win.
"We still think we are one of the best teams," said Antetokounmpo. "Tonight we did not have an 'A' or 'B' game, probably a 'C' game, but we were still close to winning the game in Boston."
Khris Middleton and Malcom Brogdon scored 16 each and Eric Bledsoe had 13 points and seven assists for the Bucks.
The Celtics, whose previous record of 3 points was 19, failed to tie the NBA record of 25, set by the Cleveland Cavaliers in a victory over the Atlanta Hawks on March 4.
Boston did not score in the fourth until Jayson Tatum hit a 3-pointer with 9:13 remaining in the game. Milwaukee continued to push and shot within 113-112 when Bledsoe made 1 of 2 from the foul line with 13 seconds.
That was as close as the Bucks would come when the Celtics sealed him off the foul line.
Irving landed 3 points in a row at the end of the second quarter and Boston led 55-53 at halftime. He opened the second half with three straight games from beyond the goal and the Celtics seemed to be sailing with a 93-78 lead entering the fourth quarter.
"We can improve, we can play better, but the credit to Boston tonight," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said.
ARRIVING ALONG
The maximum of Hayward's previous season was 15. Thursday was actually his highest scoring game as a member of the Celtics, which was lost last season after a horrific ankle injury in the opening game.
Hayward had a scare in the first half when he fell hard on the left ankle, but could finish.
"I think I had a good start and that was important to me, it also felt good to be out there at the end of the game," Hayward said. "It's a continuous process, the last game was not so good, it was a little better tonight."
ALL PRAISE!
There was an extended time in the middle of the first quarter, when Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought the World Series championship trophy to the court, followed by his players.
Fans roared when Cora pulled the team out of the tunnel and grew stronger each time a player lifted the trophy for fans to continue a celebration that began on Sunday with a series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
To emphasize the visit, the fans erupted in a round of their favorite contemptuous song about the rivals of the New York Yankees.
