Iranian protesters sing & # 039; Death to America & # 039; On the eve of the oil sanctions of the United States.
DUBAI (Reuters) - Thousands of Iranians shouting "Death to the United States" gathered on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of the takeover of the United States Embassy during the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the imminent re-imposition of US sanctions on Iran's oil sector.
Students who attended the government-organized rally in the capital, Tehran, broadcast live on state television, burned Stars and Stripes, an effigy of Uncle Sam and photos of President Donald Trump in front of the former embassy compound.
Hard-line students stormed the embassy on November 4, 1979, shortly after the fall of the US-backed shah, and 52 Americans were taken hostage there for 444 days. The two countries have been enemies since then.
State media said millions attended rallies in towns and cities, swearing allegiance to the clerical establishment and supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The figure could not be confirmed independently by Reuters.
Demonstrations are held on the anniversary of the inauguration of the embassy every year. But the grudge is especially strong this time after Trump's decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers with Iran and re-impose sanctions on Tehran.
The agreement led to the lifting of most of the international economic and financial sanctions in exchange for Tehran stopping its nuclear activity in dispute under the surveillance of the United States.
Trump said the agreement was weak and favored Iran. The other signatories, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, remain committed to the agreement.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the fines that will be returned on Monday "are the toughest sanctions that have been implemented in the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Interviewed on "Fox News Sunday," Pompeo said: "There are a handful of places where countries have already made significant reductions in their crude oil exports and they need a little more time to get to zero. " He did not give more details.
Pompeo noted that oil sanctions would be combined with financial sanctions involving "more than 600 designations of people and companies in Iran."
The Iranian military said it will launch two days of air defense drills on Monday and assured the Iranians that it could neutralize any threat, the state news agency IRNA reported.
"We can assure our people that the enemy will not be able to carry out their threats against our country," said Habibollah Sayyari, the coordinator, quoting IRNA.

"DONALD SALMAN"
Among the anniversary events was an exhibition of cartoons in Tehran called "Donald Salman", a reference to the close ties between the president of the United States and King Salman, ruler of Iran's regional rival, Saudi Arabia.
"It's black humor, but the public can also reflect on the contradictions in the behavior of Trump and (the royal house of Al Saud)," said artist Masoud Shojaei Tabatabai to state television in Tehran.
The reinstatement of US sanctions on Monday against oil sales and Iran's banking sector is part of Trump's effort to force Iran to halt its ballistic and nuclear missile programs, as well as its support for the armed forces. of power in conflicts throughout the Middle East.
In a speech on Saturday, Khamenei said Trump's policies were facing opposition around the world. "The United States' goal has been to restore the domination it had, but it has failed, the United States has been defeated by the Islamic Republic in the last 40 years," he said.
