The successful landing of InSight on Mars occurred today in an area known as Elysium Planitia. This is the first Martian landing in six years, after Curiosity arrived on the planet in August 2012.

The landing consisted of several stages. The most crucial ones required the probe to align to enter the atmosphere of Mars at an angle of 12 degrees; deploy your supersonic parachute and its landing legs; and ignite their descent engines to settle gently on the surface.

All this happened within only 6 minutes, the travel time of InSight in the atmosphere of the Red Planet.

InSight will do science with two main instruments: an excavation probe and a set of supersensitive seismometers. The data will reveal a lot about the structure and internal composition of Mars.

In addition, scientists will use InSight's communications equipment to measure the slight wobble of the rotation axis of Mars. This information will provide key data about the core of the planet.

Taken together, InSight's observations will help scientists better understand how rocky planets form and evolve.
