The Hiawatha glacier was named in 1922 in honor of the native American leader who was co-founder of the Iroquois Confederation. Almost a century later, scientists using advanced technology to look below more than half a mile (almost a kilometer) of ice discovered a hidden crater.

The hidden crater extends almost 20 miles (31 km) wide. A prominent edge surrounds the depression.

A view of the bedrock under the ice facing northwest, towards the sea, shows the terrain of the crater. In addition to the edge surrounding the feature, the researchers behind the discovery also saw a slight increase in the center. Such an increase is a fairly common feature in impact craters, but it is not a diagnosis of how the gape was formed.
