Google employees go out to protest the treatment of women.

Hundreds of Google engineers and other workers are expected to leave work on Thursday morning to protest the indulgent treatment of the internet company by executives accused of sexual misconduct.

It is the latest expression of a violent reaction against the exploitation of female subordinates by men in a business, entertainment and politics. In Silicon Valley, women are also getting fed up with the male-dominated composition of the technology industry's workforce, a clear imbalance that critics say fosters unpleasant behaviors similar to those of a university fraternity.

The Google protest, announced "Walkout for Real Change", takes place a week after a story by the New York Times detailed the allegations of sexual misconduct about the creator of his Android software, Andy Rubin. The report said that Rubin received a $ 90 million compensation package in 2014, although Google concluded that the allegations of sexual misconduct were again credible.

Rubin mocked the Times article as inaccurate and denied the allegations in a tweet.

The same story also revealed allegations of sexual misconduct by other executives, including Richard DeVaul, a director of the same Google-affiliated lab that created faraway projects such as self-driving cars and balloons with Internet transmission. DeVaul remained in laboratory "X" after allegations of sexual misconduct about him appeared a few years ago, but on Tuesday he resigned without dismissal, Google confirmed Wednesday.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai apologized for the company's "past actions" in an email sent to employees on Tuesday. "I understand the anger and disappointment that many of you feel," Pichai wrote. "I'm also sorry, and I'm totally committed to moving forward on an issue that has persisted for too long in our society, and, yes, also here on Google."

The email does not mention reported incidents involving Rubin, DeVaul or any other person, but Pichai did not dispute anything in the history of the Times.

Last week, in an email, Pichai and Eileen Naughton, a Google executive in charge of personnel matters, tried to reassure workers that the company had cracked down on sexual misconduct since Rubin's departure four years ago. .

Among other things, Pichai and Naughton revealed that Google had fired 48 employees, including 13 senior managers, for "sexual harassment" in recent years without giving any of them severance packages.

But Thursday's training could indicate that a significant number of the 94,000 employees who work for Google and its corporate parent Alphabet Inc. are not convinced that the company is doing enough to adhere to Alphabet's own decree that urges all employees to "do the right thing".

A congresswoman from Silicon Valley tweeted her support for Google's footprint using the "metoo" hashtag that has become a battle cry for women fighting against sexual misconduct. "Why do you think it's okay to reward the perpetrators and also rape the victims?" asked Representative Jackie Speier, who represents a wealthy district where many of Google's employees live.
