Floods in Thailand and Cambodia
The seasonal monsoon rains have left parts of Southeast Asia flooded. The image on the right shows the conditions in Thailand and Cambodia on November 4, 2018, after the water spilled over the banks of several rivers and lakes and filled the surrounding alluvial plains. By way of comparison, the image on the left shows the same area on April 10, 2018, before the monsoon season began.
Both images in false color were acquired with the Moderate resolution image spectroradiometer (MODIS) at NASA Terra satelite. They were composed using a combination of infrared and visible light (MODIS bands 7-2-1), which facilitates the detection of flooded areas. The water is navy blue to black, the vegetation is bright green, the clouds are cyan and the bare soil is brown.
In Cambodia, seasonal rains typically fill the Mekong River and spill through the floodplain, although some years bring more water than others. According to news reportsThe 2018 rainy season in Cambodia has fluctuated between flood and drought conditions, affecting agriculture in the region.
Seasonal floods are also important for the freshwater marsh southeast of Tonlé Sap, the "big lake" of Cambodia, and for the birds and mammals that depend on that habitat. In November 2018, the area was added to the list of Ramsar sitesWetland areas identified as of international importance.
In Thailand, floods are visible near Bangkok within the Chao Phraya river basin. The areas to the south, in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon, registered deadly floods after the fall of 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain on November 9.
