Facebook blocks 115 accounts for the supposed & # 039; inauthentic behavior & # 039; ahead of the partial exams

Facebook has blocked 115 accounts on its platforms due to alleged "inauthentic behavior" before the 2018 semester elections on Tuesday.

Facebook made the announcement in a statement late on Monday, saying it blocked 30 accounts on its platform of the same name and 85 on Instagram that authorities believe linked to foreign entities that try to interfere with the next elections in the United States.

The social media giant said US police identified the accounts on Sunday, citing "the online activity they recently discovered and that they believe could be linked to foreign entities," the statement said. Facebook, which owns Instagram, said it immediately blocked the accounts and opened an investigation.

Almost all blocked Facebook pages appeared to be written in French or Russian, although most of the Instagram accounts were in English, the company said, noting that some of the Instagram accounts focused on celebrities and political debates.

"Typically, we would be further away with our analysis before announcing something publicly," Facebook said. "But since we are only one day away from the important elections in the US, we wanted to inform people about the measures we have taken and the facts as we know them today."

Facebook said it planned to release more information as the investigation continues.

"Once we know more, even if these accounts are linked to the Internet Research Agency based in Russia or other foreign entities, we will update this publication," Facebook said.

General manager Mark Zuckerberg warned last quarter that the company's sales growth would decelerate significantly for the rest of 2018 as security spending increases.

The company said it eliminated 82 "bad actors" from Facebook in October due to a lack of coordinated authentication. behavior that originated in Iran. Facebook also revealed sophisticated attempts by Russia to interfere with the elections and promote political discord in the United States.

An internal investigation into Iranian accounts found that more than 1 million Facebook users had followed at least one of the fraudulent pages, while some 25,000 users joined at least one of these politically oriented groups, according to a statement from the company.

The Facebook company opened a war room earlier this year in an effort to combat electoral interference around the world. The company said that the so-called war room of the elections is the nerve center of the struggle of the social network against misinformation and political interference.

"Finding and eliminating abuse is a constant challenge, our adversaries are smart and well financed, and as we improve the change of their tactics," the company said in October. "We forbid coordinated inauthentic behavior on Facebook because we want people who use our services to trust the connections they make."
