Europe Is Launching to New Weather Satellite Tonight. Watch It Live!

The European launch provider. Arianespace will launch a new weather satellite today (November 6), and you can watch it live online!

At 7:47 p.m. EST (0047 GMT on November 7), the MetOp-C will take off in an Arianespace version of the Soyuz rocket from Russia from the Space Center of Guyana in French Guiana. A live stream of the launch will start 20 minutes before takeoff, and you can Watch it live here on Space.com, courtesy of Arianespace.

Approximately one hour after takeoff, MetOp-C will separate from the upper stage of the rocket and enter a polar orbit more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth, where it will spend the next 5 years monitoring the Earth's climate and providing important information for meteorologists

"The sun's synchronous polar orbit of the satellites not only places them in constant sunlight (which is convenient for charging solar panels), but also" allows global observation of climate, atmospheric composition, oceans and land surfaces. "Arianespace officials said in a description of the mission.

MetOp-C will be the third and last satellite of the MetOp series of meteorological satellites, developed by the European Space Agency and operated by the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). MetOp-A and MetOp-B were launched in 2006 and 2012, and those satellites are still working.

A Soyuz Arianespace rocket is on its launch pending the installation of the MetOp-C European weather satellite before a planned launch from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, on November 6, 2018.
