Drones to help rescue lost hikers

Finding lost hikers in the woods can be a difficult and time-consuming process, given that helicopters, as well as drones in their normal mode of operation, can not peek through the dense canopy of trees. Recently, it has been proposed that drones conveniently prepared and with great autonomy of decision could descend as many times as necessary below the canopy of the trees in order to help in these searches. However, GPS signals used to guide aircraft may be unreliable or non-existent in forested environments.

The team of Yulun Tian, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US city of Cambridge, has devised an autonomous system for a fleet of drones to search cooperatively under the dense canopies of a forest. These drones communicate with each other wirelessly without GPS and the only computation they use is that performed by their on-board hardware.

Each four-rotor drone is equipped with a LiDAR-type laser tracking system (so-called "LIght Detection And Ranging"), which measures the time it takes for light to be reflected on the surface of an object , and allows to map three-dimensionally, with an enormous level of detail, the scrutinized environment. The drones thus scan the environmental obstacles and in this way can estimate their position, detect trees and other obstacles, plan their routes, and finally, if there, find what they are looking for.

As the drone flies, it creates an individual three-dimensional map of the terrain. Algorithms help you recognize unexplored or already recorded points, so you know when an area is fully mapped. An external ground station fuses the individual maps of the multiple drones into a single global 3D map that can be monitored by the human rescue personnel.

When used in a real situation, the drones will be equipped with a system that allows them to identify, from the multitude of things around them, the missing hiker. Once located, the drone will label your position on the global map. The rescue team humans will then be able to use this information to plan a rescue mission.
