Diver dies in recovery effort by air jet Lion Lion
JAKARTA, Indonesia A diver died looking for victims of a Lion Air plane that crashed in the Java Sea, authorities said on Saturday, while search teams were still searching for the new
The Indonesian search and rescue agency said Syahrul Anto, a 48-year-old diver, a veteran of other operations, including a Accident of AirAsia in the Java Sea Almost four years ago, he died on Friday in the area of the underwater debris field of flight 610. The agency did not state the cause of death.
Monday's crash was the first to involve a Boeing 737 Max 8, the latest variant of the popular 737 single-aisle. The plane was delivered to Lion Air, one of Asia's largest low-cost airlines, in August.
A team of Indonesian and American accident investigators, including representatives of Boeing Co. and
General Energy
Co.
, a partner in the engine manufacturer CFM International, saw the wreckage recovered in a Jakarta port. Officials expressed the hope that they would not need to rebuild the entire aircraft to understand the cause.
"We will try to recover as much as we can," said Nurcahyo Utomo, a researcher with the National Transport Security Committee of Indonesia. "If the registrars do not provide all the information, we will try to reconstruct as much of the aircraft as possible."
The search teams have not found one of the black boxes, a voice recorder in the cockpit, but they say they hope to find it soon by connecting it to the pings it can emit through the water for at least 30 days.
"Early this morning we heard the sound of a ping, although it was quite weak," said Muhammad Syaugi, head of the search and rescue agency.
The divers have recovered the memory unit of the other black box, The flight data recorder, at a depth of about 100 feet on the muddy seafloor. Mr. Utomo said on Saturday that the device was in good condition.
Researchers are cleaning the unit to download data that could give them hours of detailed information about the operation of the systems. In a modern aircraft such as the 737 Max 8, it would record more than 1,000 parameters ranging from basic speed and altitude to flight control inputs.
