Deputy Sheriff, 11 others killed in a shooting in a California bar: police
(Reuters) - An armed man killed 12 people, including a sheriff's deputy, after he walked into a bar in southern California and started firing on Wednesday night, police said.
The gunman was also killed, said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean at a press conference early on Thursday, although it was not immediately clear by whom.
An unknown number of people were injured during the attack at the Borderline Bar and Grill, a country and western location in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks.
"It's a horrible scene there," Dean said. "There is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that."
Authorities said the shots were still being fired when the first officers arrived on the scene.
The dead officer was identified as Sergeant Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department, Dean told reporters. Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer were the first to arrive at the bar and entered just before 11:30 p.m. PST (0730 GMT).
After a break of about 15 minutes, more officers entered and found the alleged gunman dead from a gunshot wound. It was not clear if he committed suicide or if he was killed by officers, Dean said.
It was the last mass shooting in the United States, six days after the death of two women in a yoga class in Tallahassee, Florida, and 12 days after an anti-Semitic gunman entered a synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11 worshipers.
President Donald Trump, who has resisted an increase in orders for tougher gun checks as 17 students were shot dead at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida earlier this year, said on Twitter that he had "reported completely about the terrible shooting in California. "
Witness John Hedge told ABC News that he was near the front door of the California bar when the shooting started.

"I just started listening to these big pops, Pop Pop Pop," he said. "There were probably three or four. I hit the ground. Glanced up. The security guard ... was shot, he was down. The armed man threw smoke grenades all over the place. I saw him point to the back of the cash register and he kept shooting. "
Dean estimated that between 10 and 15 people, including one with a gunshot wound, had gone to area hospitals. He said he thought his injuries were minor and that most of them were probably injured while they escaped, some breaking windows.
"There were people hiding in the bathrooms, people hiding in the attics," Dean said.
Dean said the shooter had a gun and that at this early stage of the investigation he believed he had only one gun. The witnesses described a rapid sequence of shots that made them think he was using a semi-automatic weapon.
Thousand Oaks was named the third safest city in the United States in 2018 by the Niche website.
"I learned that it does not matter what community you are in," Dean told reporters when asked if he was surprised that this was happening in Thousand Oaks. "It does not matter how secure your community is, it can happen anywhere."

Taylor Von Molt, 21, told CNN that the shooter wore what looked like a handkerchief and a hooded sweatshirt and was a corpulent man.
She said that she was part of a group of dancers who met at the bar for a college night every Wednesday.
None of the civilian victims were identified. Helus died while receiving treatment at a local hospital several hours after being shot, Dean said.
