China opens air show with large jet model, flypasts for fighter aircraft.
ZHUHAI, China (Reuters) - China began its biggest air show on Tuesday with a sample of its aviation ambitions, presenting a life-size model of a long-haul plane it is developing with Russia and showing off its stealth fighter jet J- twenty. In a roaring flight demonstration.
The biennial Airshow China, which takes place in the coastal city of Zhuhai from November 6 to 11, is traditionally an event for Beijing to showcase its growing aviation prowess. This time, however, comes in the context of a trade war between China and the United States.
China has become a key hunting ground for foreign aviation firms to make deals thanks to the growing demand for travel, but its trade relations with other countries have been proven by their ambitions to grow their own champions in industries such as aviation .
Among the projects included in this category is the CR929, which is being jointly developed by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China and the United Aircraft Corporation of Russia (UAC) and hopes to compete with those of Boeing Co (PROHIBITION) 787 and Airbus SE (AIR.PA) A350 aircraft.
"Our program is progressing and is scheduled," UAC president Yury Slyusar said at a ceremony to present the CR929 passenger cabin and cockpit model at the air show.
"It is currently in the preliminary design phase and we are also in the selection phase of equipment and suppliers, which will end at the end of 2019."
Hundreds of spectators and industry executives at the air show were also invited to a flight demonstration involving three of Chengdu J-20's stealth fighters from China, who debuted at the fair two years ago with a flying flight of 60 seconds.
China put the J-20 into service last year, which experts say is part of Beijing's plan to reduce the military technology gap with the United States and its F-35 poaching.
"We are going to see more of the J-20 this year and, therefore, the message is that this plane is in greater numbers in the Chinese service," said veteran China observer Bradley Perrett of Aviation Week.
DO NOT DISCUSS THE COMMERCIAL WAR
The model CR929 aircraft, which was 22 meters long, 6.5 meters high and 5.9 meters wide, showed a spacious interior with 9 basic seats in economy class.
The cockpit contained fictitious instruments, with real systems yet to be chosen, including a sidebar similar to the flight control preferred by Airbus over the traditional control column.
"It's more Airbus than Boeing," said a senior executive in the Western aerospace industry.
UAC and COMAC announced that they would cooperate in a wide-air jet program in 2014 and began the large-scale development of the program three years later by forming a China-Russia Commercial Aircraft International Corporation (CRAIC) joint venture.
To date, they have already sought proposals for the engine and landing gear of the plane.
However, COMAC executives refused to comment on what the current trade frictions with the United States could mean for their selection of suppliers.
"I'm not going to discuss this," said COMAC's chief designer for CR929, Chen Yingchun.
