To study how in early childhood the gestures are coordinated with the vocal elements, a team of psychologists from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) (Spain) observed the communicative behaviors of ten girls and boys, from the time they were 9 months old until they fulfilled 18 months of age.



The research is based on a perspective that considers that gestural and motor components are an integral part of the linguistic system, and that communication skills emerge in a complex system in which not only articulated verbal behavior must be considered.



"We identified all communicative behaviors and analyzed those that were multimodal, that is, those that included gestures and vocalizations. After analyzing how certain characteristics of these behaviors changed as children grow and develop more complex forms of communication. On the one hand, we measure the total duration of communicative behaviors. In addition, we measured the degree to which the elements of different modalities, gestural and vocal, overlapped in time, "explain the authors.



The work also analyzed the synchrony between the prominent parts of the gesture (the point where the gesture is expressed in its maximum extension) and the verbal component (the point of maximum tone), since in the adult language the prominent parts of both elements appear synchronized.

The work, published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, also states that synchrony also increases as children get older when they consider the prominent parts of the gesture and vocalizations.



"This means that very early on, girls and boys learn to integrate different communication elements when they want to transmit something to another person," said Eva Murillo and Marta Casla.



"These measures of synchrony - they add - were related to independent measures of development of the later vocabulary, that is to say, with the number of words the child knows how to say. This implies that those who are more skilled at coordinating the different communication elements are subsequently able to use more different words "



This is important because it highlights the importance of considering in the development of language not only the verbal elements (if a child speaks or not, if you already know how to say words or not) but also the gestures and how both elements are coordinated. "The development of this line of research will allow us to know what elements in early communicative development predict subsequent development, so that we can detect very early any possible difficulty or alteration," the authors conclude.
