PARAÍSO, Calif. (Reuters) - Three windblown wildfires burned in California on Friday morning, including one that prompted the evacuation of 75,000 homes near a city still recovering from a mass shooting.

Voluntary evacuations of 75,000 homes were requested due to the Woolsey fire that affected parts of Thousand Oaks in Ventura County, northwest Los Angeles, the site of a shooting massacre this week.

A former US Navy combat veteran opened fire at a bar full of university students in the city on Wednesday night, killing 12 people and stunning a community with a reputation for safety.

An evacuation site was in its capacity at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center, which had also served as a reunification and family assistance site after the shooting.

Several evacuation centers issued protective masks for citizens, said Emergency Services of Ventura County. Many schools were closed in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Parts of the coastal city of Malibu, about 30 miles (48 km) west of downtown Los Angeles, were under evacuation orders, local media reported.

The Woolsey fire also affected parts of Los Angeles County, where mandatory evacuation orders were in effect as of Friday morning south of State Highway 101, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

"Mandatory" evacuations were set up for the eastern canyons and near Malibu, said a Twitter post on Malibu Search Rescue just before 7 a.m. PT (1500 GMT), which added: "Do not wait!"

The fire had jumped onto Highway 101 in several places and was moving south of the Malibu coast. Parts of that important highway were closed in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, officials said.

The fire went on Thursday afternoon south of the town of Simi Valley, officials in Ventura County said.

Also burning in Ventura County was the Hill fire, which had burned 10,000 acres (4047 hectares) on Thursday night, authorities said.

In northern California, the Camp Fire had tripled its size to 70,000 acres (2838 hectares) and was contained by 5 percent, officials from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said at a briefing. Friday morning, adding that those estimates were preliminary.

The fire moved rapidly outside the city of Chico early on Friday, forcing thousands of people to flee after it left the nearby city of Paradise in ruins, Cal Fire said.

Evacuation notices were established for the houses on the east side of Chico, a city of approximately 93,000 people about 90 miles north of Sacramento.

The Chico Fire Department said: "Firefighters continue to actively activate fire to protect life and property."

The flames from the uncontrolled 20,000-acre (8,100-hectare) fields were driven westward by winds of 35 miles per hour, officials said.

The previous fire swept Paradise, about 20 miles east of Chico.

"The city is devastated, everything is destroyed," said Scott Maclean, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Maclean said an as-yet-unspecified number of civilians and firefighters was injured and it could be days before authorities learn of any deaths.

In Paradise, located on a ridge and with limited escape routes, traffic accidents turned the roads into a traffic jam. That led residents to abandon their vehicles and flee the flames, carrying children and pets, officials said.

"It's very chaotic," said Officer Ryan Lambert of the California Highway Patrol.

The fire started early Thursday and was the fiercest of several wildfires across California, in one of the worst years for wildfires in the state.

Strong winds are expected in the mountains and valleys of Ventura County and in coastal areas, the NWS said. Those winds had already helped double the size of the Woolsey fire to 8,000 acres (3238 hectares), fire officials said.

Trips were limited on US Highway 101 in the county, and parts of the highway were closed in both counties, highway patrol officers said.
