Brady, Patriots beat Rodgers, Packers 31-17
Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers spent the week telling anyone who asked him that the other guy was the best quarterback.
In the second showdown between future Hall of Famers, he was the one who had five Super Bowl rings that left the field with the victory.
Brady threw for 294 yards and a touchdown, and James White scored two touchdowns to lead the New England Patriots to a 31-17 victory over Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.
It was the sixth consecutive win for the Patriots (7-2).
"We made some plays in the fourth quarter when we needed it," Brady said. "Every time you beat a good team, it feels good, then, 7-2 is a long way from 1-2 that we were."
Rodgers completed 24 of 43 passes and two touchdowns, but failed to unite his team after tying the game in the third quarter. Rodgers won the first showdown with Brady at Lambeau Field in 2014.
"If you play long enough and you have the sustained greatness that Tom has had, there will be many records," Rodgers said. "It has been the gold standard as a quarterback for two decades."
It was 17, all late in the third quarter when Aaron Jones groped for Green Bay (3-4-1).
New England wide receiver Julian Edelman hit White in a 37-yard run to set up White's second touchdown, a 1-yard run. On the next possession of the Patriots, Brady connected with Josh Gordon for a 55-yard TD.
Gordon caught five passes for 130 yards, the 12th game that received 100 yards of his career.
With tight end Rob Gronkowski out with a back and ankle injury and leading rusher Sony Michel for the second consecutive week with a knee problem, Brady and the Patriots had to be creative.
They went back to receiver Cordarrelle Patterson to help carry the load in the field.
Patterson was effective for the second consecutive week, running 11 times for 61 yards and a touchdown.
"A lot of our team is made up of players who may not have registered," Brady said. "But they are asked to do it ... Many guys fall and one falls short in certain places, obviously we have a lot of confidence in him that when he has the ball in his hands, good things will happen."
He worked together with White to keep the Packers' defense guessing. White took advantage and found space to convert the short endings into first opportunities.
New England also capitalized on a pair of long passes to establish scores.
Rodgers was blank in the first half. It was elusive in the pocket and extended the plays with the feet, maintaining the secondary balance of the Patriots long enough to create space in the field or some big gains.
The longest was a 51-yard pass to Márquez Valdés-Scantling in the third quarter that helped set up Rodgers' 15-yard pass to Jimmy Graham who tied the game at 17. But the pocket got smaller in the second half when the Patriots defense accelerated him, he hit him six times and fired him once.
Brady completed 16 of his first 22 passes, but had six consecutive incompletions in the third quarter.
There was no rotation in the game until Jones Guy of Green Bay was stripped of Lawrence Guy at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The fumble was recovered by Stephon Gilmore in the 24 of the Patriots.
New England capitalized quickly, using four complete passes by Brady and a 37-yard pass from Julian Edelman to reach the Packers' 2. White scored one game two plays later to put the Patriots back 24-17.
"Obviously it was a great play in the game," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That was a turning point."
The Patriots defense was tightened in the next Green Bay series. It culminated in third opportunity when Adrian Clayborn and Trey Flowers demolished to Rodgers by a sack of 9 yards and forced a punt.
It turned out to be expensive.
Only in the third play of the next drive, Brady found Gordon in the middle. Packers cornerback Tramon Williams had a shot at a tackle, but he kicked Gordon for his 55-yard touchdown.
TOSSED
The safety of the Packers Jermaine Whitehead was expelled in the second quarter.
Whitehead was exchanging shoves with the center of the Patriots, David Andrews, when the second defensive year of Auburn turned and slapped Andrews in the face.
He was called by unnecessary and thrown rudeness. Whitehead was the replacement for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who was traded to the Washington Redskins last week.
Injuries
Packers: WR Geronimo Allison was inactive for the Packers with a groin injury. He was a key contributor to the passing game before missing two weeks because of a hamstring problem. ... At the start of RT, Bryan Buluga left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return. ... CB Kevin King left the game with a hamstring injury and did not return. ... S Kentrell Brice left in the third quarter with a knee injury.
Patriots: Gordon said he dislocated his finger early in the game while catching a pass but played through the pain. "It was like a strange accident, nothing too crazy," Gordon said. "He dislocated, so I put him in place a couple of times."

The Boston Red Sox continued their celebration of the World Series championship with an appearance on the field before the game.
The owner of the team, John Henry, manager Alex Cora and several players, including World Series MVP Steve Pearce, J.D. Martinez and Brock Holt were on top of a duck boat with their championship trophy when they were driven to the field before the kickoff.
Cora greeted the owner of the Patriots team, Robert Kraft and others, and also took a selfie with Brady.
