Benznidazole improves the long-term prognosis of patients with Chagas
The antiparasitic drug benznidazole can improve the long-term prognosis of patients with chronic Chagas disease, according to a study recently published in the journal 'PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases' by Clareci Silva Cardoso, of the Federal University of São João del- Rei (Brazil) and colleagues from the SaMi-Trop study, a project funded by NIAID / NIH, the National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health of the United States.
Chagas disease, caused by exposure to the protozoan 'Trypanosoma cruzi', is one of the main causes of heart disease and mortality in Latin America. It is estimated that 5.7 million people are infected by Chagas in the region, however, there are few treatments and their specific therapeutic benefits are not well known.
Over two years, the research team observed 1,813 patients who had tested positive for 'T. cruzi ', and compared the clinical results of those who had received benznidazole treatment with those who had not taken it, according to the' PLOS 'information collected by DiCYT.
The authors found that patients who had been treated with benznidazole while still in the early stages of the disease had improved clinical and parasitological outcomes after the two-year follow-up period. Compared to the untreated group, the researchers observed lower mortality rates, lower parasite counts and a lower risk of Chagas-related heart disease.

It is one of the most complete studies of this type that demonstrate a remarkable clinical benefit from benznidazole. However, according to the authors, further research is needed to learn more about the appropriate dose and duration of treatment.
Despite the limitations of the study, the researchers recommend using benznidazole to treat Chagas disease early. "Because there are millions of patients with Chagas not treated in the world since there will be no new treatments available in the near future, it is reasonable to consider the treatment with benznidazole of all patients with Chagas disease without advanced heart disease, especially those who have less than 50 years ", they underline.
