AT & T will remove a dozen users of its Internet service for piracy violations

HBO is no longer available to Dish TV subscribers due to a stagnation in the programming negotiations between Dish Network and HBO's parent company, AT & T.

Dishonest Serpentines, take note: AT & T plans to cancel Internet service due to the repeated violation of piracy and copyright infringement.

"Content owners notified us when they thought they had evidence that an Internet account was sharing copyrighted material illegally," said Jim Greer, an AT & T spokesperson, in a statement provided to USA TODAY.

"Based on the notices we receive, we identify the customer on the account and share the information we receive with them, we also contact the customer to inform them about copyright infringement and offer assistance to help prevent the activity from continuing. the number of customers who continue to receive additional notifications of copyright infringement by the content owners despite our efforts to educate them will leave their service. "

AT & T told the news site Axios that more than a dozen affected customers will be informed within the next week.

In accordance with AT & T's policies, affected users were notified at least nine times separately with allegations that they were potentially infringing the copyrights of others.

It is not clear what content (such as movies, TV shows, music, books, etc.) was being broadcast, shared or downloaded or if it was content that AT & T now owns as part of its $ 85 billion Time Warner purchase. AT & T has implemented piracy policies for years, and the company did not change them as a result of the merger.

This seems to be one of the first times that AT & T has directly applied its piracy policy. Like other Internet providers, AT & T was formerly part of a "Copyright Alert System," a group in the Internet industry that worked with the motion picture and record industries to educate users to try to reduce the infringement of copyright.

The group would send up to six warnings to users who violated copyright, and the Internet service slowed down in the fifth and sixth alerts if the misbehavior continued.

After not doing much to prevent online piracy, however, it was closed in 2017.

It goes without saying that, when you buy Time Warner, it is likely that AT & T will find a lot of piracy in the near future. "Game of Thrones", the mega HBO program, has been the most pirated television program in the BitTorrent file exchange service in the last six years, according to the website TorrentFreak. HBO will launch the eighth and final season of the program next year.

HBO was part of Time Warner and is now in the WarnerMedia division of AT & T.
