One month away from the most distant planetary meeting in history.
It seems like yesterday when it was flying over Pluto and we marveled at a strange, complex and absolutely unexpected world in more than one aspect. Today, just over 3 years since that historic day, the small New Horizons faces a new encounter with history, 1500 million kilometers beyond the famous dwarf planet. In little more than a month your destiny will cross with Ultima Thule, marking a milestone that will surely take a long time to be overcome. The encounter with the farthest celestial body ever visited by Humanity has already begun.
It's not about a world like Pluto, because with a size 100 times smaller, it is closer to a large asteroid (or asteroids, since it is perhaps a double body) and we should not expect the tremendous geological complexity of this first one, but for astronomers it has an incalculable value. For all we know, it was formed 4.5 or 4.6 billion years ago, to 6,000 million kilometers of Sun. That means that it is preserved unaltered, at a temperature that approximates absolute zero, since then, so it probably represents the best sample of the ancient solar nebula ever studied. Or what is the same, New Horizons will fly over a very short distance a type of celestial body never observed before.
Their geology and composition should teach us a lot about how the original "building blocks" were formed. Will it be an agglomeration of even smaller bodies formed at the birth of the Solar System? Will it have an atmosphere? Will it have atmosphere? Moons? Soon we will have the answers. The time for Ultima arrives.
