European astronaut Alexander Gerst was surprised to see a circular glow, like a rainbow, a phenomenon known as a glory, in the clouds below the International Space Station on September 14, 2018.

He took a couple of photos of the colorful glow and posted the photos on Twitter on Tuesday (November 6). In a sentence, the European Space Agency (ESA) explained the rarity of a glory, which results from the sunlight that bounces off the drops of water in a particular way.

Because the phenomenon is based on specific atmospheric conditions, mountain climbers and pilots report it more frequently at relatively high altitudes, but they are usually not as high as Spacial station. While living in the laboratory in orbit, astronauts are about 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the surface of the Earth.

The ESA did not provide any additional details on how such a high glory could be formed, but The image of gerst It could provoke deeper investigations.

"Sometimes, a simple photograph can provoke a scientific investigation or even a complete scientific investigation," said the ESA statement. "Alexander Aurora photos[s] since their last mission in 2014 they are adding additional information for researchers who analyze these beautiful atmospheric light displays. "

Leaving the analysis aside, let us take a moment to glory in the beauty of this atmospheric phenomenon.
