What can be learned from the Madoff case? Does it make sense to invest in a "black hole"?
Bernard Madoff's case is well known, at least roughly. A huge investment fund that was actually a Ponzi scam. What lessons can be drawn from that case applied to astrology? Similarities that are worth thinking about.
There are some audiovisual productions, as well as books, about this financial scandal. Markopolos quickly realized that everything was a scam. He contacted an acquaintance of the SEC, the body that regulates financial transactions, and obtained an interview with an executive.
But Markopolos had two communication problems: on the one hand he was very technical, very mathematical, and the officials, no, therefore did not understand what he was saying. But they did understand the form: as the man was convinced that he was a scam and was against, he was very energetic, exhaustive, his speech was rigid, he did not admit another possibility. However, Markopolos did not use only mathematical formulas to explain the fraud. I also had another way of thinking: the red flags. There was information about the management of the funds that was at least striking. That was what he called red flags, as a sign that something was wrong. And he found many, dozens, of red flags.
For example, that over a period of time, the funds managed by Madoff had only had 4% losses. It's like saying that someone plays the lottery every day of the year and guesses 300 times and does not hit only 65. There can not be a "method", unless it's a scam. It is statistically unlikely that someone can have that level of success in a large number of cases. I will return to this concept immediately to relate it to astrology. Remember the red flags.

The only thing they received in exchange for the money was a monthly report on the state of the account, which always indicated profits, so the capital increased. Ambitious to obtain something for nothing, to be able to live without working, blindly accepted a fairy tale.
They were not illiterate people. In many cases they were professionals with university training.
Religious thought is based on faith, blind trust, without evidence, is enough to believe. Many Madoff investors were Jews, like him and his family, but not others. The SEC did not verify. The media did not check. The investors either.

Red flag 3: Astronologists talk about Mars, the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn. But they never refer to their physical characteristics, their magnetism, their mass, their atmospheres. Red flag 4: I am an atheist, but most people do not, choose to believe in some kind of god. However, today people believe in the god Zeus (Jupiter) or the god Saturn?
Red flag 5: the weather forecast is often incorrect. But you can explain how you reach those conclusions. There is a simple way to understand it: data are taken from the atmosphere, for example radar images that show cloud formation over a city. Data on wind direction and speed are also taken. If a cold front and another warm front are detected in opposite directions with the possibility of being found and there are clouds in that place, it is highly probable that it will rain. This is so because it is understood how rain occurs. Then the wind can change and both fronts are not found or the speed increases and the rain occurs before. It is possible that cloud formation dissipates. That's why the forecast fails. And for that reason it has value: because it is possible to explain how the conclusions are reached. It is not a mere whim.
How do astrologers reach their conclusions? When they say that the Virgo are introverted, they are making a conclusion. How do you reach that conclusion? Journalists who write articles on astrology never asked it. Nobody verified it.
