Announced Cheops launch window

The Satellite for the Characterization of Exoplanets, Cheops, will be launched between October 15 and November 14, 2019.

Cheops will take off from the European Spaceport of Kurú (French Guiana) aboard a Soyuz rocket operated by Arianespace, in which it will share space with a satellite of the Italian constellation Cosmo-SkyMed. Shortly after the ascent, the two satellites will separate and Cheops will be placed in a low Earth orbit with an altitude of 700 km.

The ESA satellite will observe certain bright stars that harbor exoplanets, especially if they are between Earth and Neptune. By focusing on known planets, you will know exactly when and where to look to "hunt" the exoplanet as it passes in front of the disk of its progenitor star. Thanks to their ability to observe multiple transits of each planet, scientists will be able to obtain high-precision signatures of the transits needed to measure the size of small planets.

The combination of the exact sizes determined by Cheops with the masses defined from other measurements will allow to calculate the apparent density of the planets and establish limits for their composition. And, when adding the data about progenitor stars and planetary orbits, we will obtain detailed information about the formation and evolution of planets in the size range of the super-stars to Neptune.

The satellite, which recently completed the environmental testing campaign at the ESA technical center in the Netherlands, is currently at the Spanish headquarters of Airbus Defense and Space to undergo the latest performance tests before it is considered ready for launch in early 2019.

In order to involve in this exciting mission and inspire different types of audience, Cheops will transport two plates on which will be engraved the miniatures of thousands of drawings made by schoolchildren, while the rocket cap will show a colorful design selected in a contest public for graphic artists that took place this year.
