Amazon mom in the reports will be divided new headquarters
Online leader Amazon Inc. declined to comment Tuesday on reports that it plans to split its new headquarters between two locations, possibly in New York City and Arlington, Virginia.
The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that the company would locate the new facilities in the Crystal City area of Arlington and in another city. Queens on Long Island in New York seems to be a likely option, but the Wall Street Journal said Dallas, Texas, was also in talks.
A spokesman for the company, Adam Sedo, contacted by phone in Seattle, said Amazon would not comment on "rumors and speculation."
An update of the company is expected soon.
The Wall Street Journal said that the main reason to have the two new facilities is to be able to recruit enough talent. The division of the 50,000 employees that are expected to occupy the headquarters staff between two locations would also alleviate the pressures of housing demand and transport.
Newspapers quoted anonymous people familiar with the matter.
The New York Times said Amazon executives met last month with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and that the state possibly offered hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies. They also met with the mayor of the city of New York, Bill de Blasio, he said.
"I will change my name to Amazon Cuomo if that is what is needed," the report quoted Cuomo as saying.
Amazon's decision to establish another headquarters sparked intense competition to win the company and its promise of 50,000 new jobs. Some places tried to stand out with acrobatics, but Amazon emphasized that they wanted incentives of dollars and cents, like tax exemptions and subsidies. I also wanted a city with more than 1 million inhabitants, an airport 45 minutes away, direct access to public transport and space to expand.
The company received 238 proposals before reducing the list to 20 in January.
Amazon has said it could spend more than $ 5 billion on the new headquarters in the next 17 years, roughly to match the size of its current home in Seattle, which has 33 buildings, 23 restaurants and 40,000 employees.
The company is not leaving Seattle, and Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has said the new headquarters will be "completely equal" to his current home.
Amazon already employs 600,000. It is expected to increase as it builds more warehouses across the country to keep up with online orders. The company recently announced that it would pay all its workers at least $ 15 per hour, but employees at their second location will be paid much more; Amazon says they will earn an average of more than $ 100,000 per year.
