Aliens? Without evidence, no

Imagine that you observe something that you do not know how it could have been built, generated or developed. In the absence of evidence, what would you do? I give you two options:
  1. Attribute it to an intelligent civilization of extraterrestrial origin.
  2. Continue research to arrive at a solution.
You do not have to be a scientist to know which is the right path. But you would be surprised to know that there are researchers who have opted for the first option.

The fact is that this weekend several newspapers have spoken of a structure that surrounds a middle-aged star as a result of the data provided by the Kepler space observatory. The star, which has the name of KIC 8462852, is located 1,500 light-years away in the direction of the Cygnus constellation. It remains that the author of the investigation, Tabetha Boyajian, of the Department of Astronomy, Yale University (United States) at no time speaks of extraterrestrial intelligence. Quite the opposite: it points to the possibility that it is a comet cloud.

The problem comes when two scientists who are not authors of the scientific article and who have not actively participated in the data analysis, Jason Wright of Penn State and Andrew Siemion from SETI project, before the impossibility of reaching a conclusion of what happens around KIC 8462852 and before carrying out the new analysis of the star that will take place next January, they grant the creation of that structure to an extraterrestrial civilization.

However, what Wright and company have done is to send a text to the scientific journal Astrophysical Journal talking about extraterrestrials as an explanation to the origin of this structure, even though the most plausible explanation is the cloud of comets.

Why have they done it? Surely to create sensationalism and that the SETI project, financed privately, is on everyone's lips. In my opinion, it is a way of advertising to seek funding since it would not be the first time that the SETI project runs out of funds.

My conclusions

Is it ethically correct to make believe the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations to obtain financing? Of course, for me it is not. In January the star will be swept from top to bottom with the best instruments available and following the guidelines that Boyajian indicated in the conclusions of his article to find out what really happens in that star.

Personally I hope that the presence of the cometary cloud referred to by Boyajian is confirmed so that certain scientists stop talking about these issues. The day we face the discovery of extraterrestrial civilizations, we will know because it can not be refuted. But this investigation not having reached closed conclusions, you can not talk about neither extraterrestrial nor comets. What can be done is to say which of the two options is the most plausible. And in this case it's the cloud of comets. But we will know when we analyze the data that will arrive in January.
