If so, will it be possible to speak with the ETs?
Who has not seen the movie ET? Who does not remember the "ET phone home" scene?
If ET ships ever arrived, could we communicate with those beings?The film Arrival (The arrival, Denis Villeneuve, 2016) raises just that. And he gives his particular answer, which can be summarized as follows: octopus-like beings write with ink in a circular form and, curiously, or not so much, perceive time in a circular way. That is, they write as they think.

There are those who postulate that mathematics is a universal language and that, therefore, that would be the appropriate means to communicate with any extraterrestrial being, since 2 plus 2 is four anywhere in the universe.
However, a first problem is that we think of quantities that we then express orally and in writing: "two" and the aliens will surely do otherwise, with other signs.
But that problem can be solved because we would find an equivalence between our mode and theirs, analogous to the equivalences between units of measurement such as Celsius and Kelvin, kilometers and parsecs.What remains to be thought is whether it is really true that mathematics is universal. It is clear that we can say that they are international and that "human mathematics" can be understood anywhere in the world. But, and in the universe?
One way to answer this is: Does the number 4 exist outside our brain? Yes, someone will say. There are four trees that are not in my head. But beware. Does the green color exist outside the human brain? Yes, he will say another. The leaves of the trees are green. No, we see the leaves green. And that happens because the sunlight is reflected in the leaves and a part of that light reaches our eyes. Without light we see nothing. What we see is light. Within the electromagnetic spectrum the so-called "visible light" is only one part. That part can be perceived by our eyes, but all the other light, no. For example, we can not see X-rays. Each part of the spectrum is radiation of different characteristics in both wavelength. Visible light, on the other hand, is also divided into different energies. Our brain assigns a color to each part of that spectrum. It is as if the brain had an ASCII table but the colors. "At such an energy, show green" says the brain. And that's why we see green.
Animals do not see things in the same way for two reasons: they have different visual apparatuses and different brains.
We evolved with a sun that emits in all the wavelengths, but a lot in the visible part and our eyes adapted to that. The nocturnal animals need another vision and in the biological natural evolution they developed another vision. But they also have different brains.THE BRAIN IN SPACE-TIME
The human brain can not stop thinking about space and time. We can imagine a story without saying where it happens and when. But it happens somewhere and at some time. Now try to think a story that does not happen anywhere and at any time. It can not, because for the human brain, without space and without time, nothing can happen.So we can go back to an earlier crumb: not only the octopuses of fiction write as they think.
Another crumb: As the novel "Flatland" put it, if we were beings of two dimensions, like a drawing on paper, could we realize that there is a third dimension? In a world inhabited by plane beings, such as circles, squares and triangles, it would be difficult to realize the third dimension, unless they have an encounter "from beyond" with the sphere ...
Human beings think in three dimensions. If there were others, we would hardly notice, which does not prevent mathematicians and physicists from speculating with such a possibility.
If the ETs were developed in another natural environment, with another type of Sun, in some strange corner of the universe, perhaps they interpret the same reality in a different way, not with other signs, but in a radically different way. If they perceive other dimensions, perhaps for them, 2 + 2 is something other than 4 and surely their brains will not interpret the light between 495 and 570 nm as green. Not only would they not use the word "green" but they would see something else. In fact, nobody assures that the ET have eyes. Maybe there are aliens of dark matter ...
Actually, both in two-dimensional space as well as in three dimensions, 2 + 2 = 4, but establishing three coordinates in space makes sense in 3D and does not make sense in 2D. In relation to possible mathematicians of the 2D world, human mathematics would have some coincidences, but they would be different and at some point incomprehensible for the mathematicians of the plane. Similarly between human mathematicians and alien mathematicians who live and think in 4D there would be coincidences, but mathematics would not be the same. At some point, we would not understand them.If we talk as we think and think according to the brain we have and the brain is the product of a natural evolution conditioned by the environment (also social), then ET could have other mathematics different from ours.
On the other hand, the mathematics we know today was not always the same. Zero was not always used, different families of numbers were not always known. That human mathematics is not complete and perfect is demonstrated by Gödel, but it is also evident by unsolved mathematical problems, as well as by the lack of a mathematical model that combines quantum with relativity.
Our mathematics is a product of our brain. Will all brains be the same in the Universe? Mathematics have order: 1,2,3 means that after 1 follows 2. If such series increases in one direction, it decreases in the other. But maybe the ETs are the same on one side as on the other.
We will tell the aliens: "We are or we are not". They will answer us "Submit or kill", and give us a scare of a novel until we realize that they are talking with palindromes, imitating us. It will be difficult to know if they are not kidding us.Entscheidungsproblem!
SYNTHESIS

If the ETs had other mathematics, they should be compatible with ours to some extent, not excluding, except in what is wrong. Therefore, they should be complementary.
If mathematics is a human invention that allows us to describe and discover the natural world well enough, it must be largely correct, but partial, since we perceive only a part of reality and our brain is limited.
Astronomers know that to have a better understanding of astrophysical processes it was necessary to learn to see differently, incorporating perceptions that humans do not have, such as X-rays, microwaves, radios, gamma rays. In an analogous way, if there are other mathematics, it will be necessary to incorporate them to have a better knowledge of the Universe.
To fully understand the objective reality, that which exists outside the brain, it will be necessary to synthesize all the mathematics of the Universe. And only with that cooperation could we not only communicate, but also understand each other. Of course, for that we should first communicate.
