A study will identify the adaptation strategies to climate change of the Mediterranean extensive livestock

Researchers of the Chair of Agroecology and Food Systems of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) (Catalonia, Spain) have launched a project to identify how people who are dedicated to extensive livestock in Spain. The initiative is carried out by the Director of the Chair, Marta Rivera, and the researchers Marina Di Masso, Elisa Oteros and Feliu López, as well as Elsa Valera, from the Center for Research in Agri-Food Economics and Development (CREDA-UPC-IRTA). The project has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, which works to preserve the natural heritage and biodiversity, act in the face of climate change and boost the green economy.

The study is based on the evidence that extensive livestock farming in the Mediterranean is "a marginalized sector, often dismissed as obsolete, which sees its viability very threatened but at the same time shows a great capacity for adaptation", explains Marta Rivera. An example would be the use of resources that would otherwise not be used, such as mountain pasture areas that, in the words of Feliu López, "contribute to the conservation of the landscape, its biodiversity and cultural identity, and help to control the forest fires and to regulate water cycles and soil quality ". It also shows the generation of "local food products with a cultural tradition, high quality and healthier, which are increasingly appreciated." For example, López points out, "there is increasing evidence that the meat of grass animals is more heart-healthy."

Researchers will work until June 2019 to deepen the analysis of these and other adaptation strategies to change that, according to López, "are based on traditional knowledge" of the ranchers and extensive livestock. The study will provide a social look at the reality of this group in a context of global change and identify the main forces of change in this sector throughout the state, with special attention to the Mediterranean area where, according to Rivera, "the projections of climate change are very worrying. "

The basis of the study will be the interviews that will be made to key informants from all over Spain, as technicians of livestock associations and public administration, as well as to the cattle ranchers themselves. The analysis of these interviews along with a review of the previous bibliography will allow obtaining conclusions that will be presented within the framework of a conference, organized within the project by the Spanish Office of Climate Change.
