After guiding us through the universe, Space.com's astrophysicist and columnist, Paul Sutter, closes his basic astronomy series this week by looking at the arguments for and against the existence of quark stars.


In Episode 12 From the Facebook Watch series "Ask a Spaceman", Sutter continues to explore the theme of these stars, finishing a miniseries that began with Episode 10 Y Episode 11. Scientists have not yet observed the stars of quarks, but objects can exist. It is also difficult to predict how to put together a quark star. As Sutter explained in episode 11, quarks come in six "flavors": up, down, up, down, strange and charming. Protons and neutrons are composed of quarks up and down, but if you were to build a quark star with these quarks, that star would be unstable. The quark stars would stabilize with the addition of strange quarks, but strange quarks are not very common in the universe. It is not clear if the universe has produced enough strange quarks to make the stars of the quarks possible, Sutter said.
