A research compares the nutrition of dairy cows with different types of feeding
Researchers from Galicia and León (Spain) have compared the nutrition of dairy cows with three different feeding types: ecological, conventional and conventional grazing. The conclusions of this work, recently published in the scientific journal Animal, can be used to make recommendations for farmers.
The study starts with Lugo scientists who belong to the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Mabegondo Agrarian Research Center, in La Coruña, who had been investigating the differences between ecological and conventional farms. At the time of analyzing the data they contacted the Department of Animal Production of the University of León (ULE) and the Mountain Livestock Institute (IGM, mixed center of the ULE and the CSIC), in addition to having the collaboration of the School of Industrial Engineering and Computer Science of the Leon academic institution.
"On the one hand, we have ecological livestock and, on the other, non-organic or conventional livestock. In turn, conventional farms can be grouped into two categories according to the feed used: farms in which the animals receive rations consisting mainly of concentrated feed, ie feed supplied in the manger; or farms where grazing is an important part of the cows' diet, "Secundino López, an IGM scientist, told DiCYT.

After carrying out research related to the nutrition and metabolism of dairy cattle, the objective now was to analyze the main characteristics of the three types of food and identify the most relevant differences among them. To this end, data have been collected on the rations ingested, the quantities and the chemical and nutritional composition of the foods used; as well as of the productive yields of the cows in a sample of Galician farms of dairy cattle representative of the three types of feeding.
The comprehensive analysis of the information allowed to demonstrate that "the differences are very evident between organic and conventional feeding based on feed, while the conventional grazing-based shared characteristics with the other two systems, but is more like the ecological" .
The key is in the amount of fodder that the animals ingest. "Ecological farms graze for a long time and are very rich in nitrogen pastures, which means they are receiving a large amount of protein," he says. However, the lower use of feed results in lower milk production.
"If we had to extract a recommendation for ecological farms, perhaps it would be good to balance the diet by providing some more energy through supplementation with feed, which would logically have to be organic feed to maintain its form of exploitation," says Lopez. However, this is an observation from a nutritional point of view in order to increase milk production, but it is possible that the farmer is not interested in increasing their costs by incorporating the feed and complies with a lower production based mainly on forage and grass.
What happens in conventional farms based on grazing is very similar, so from the point of view of milk production could also balance the diet with more feed as a complement to forages. "We do not tell them what they have to do, but we present the data so they can assess it," says the IGM researcher. The study also provides information on different milk cow production systems in northern Spain. (Source: José Pichel Andrés / DICYT)
