A fusion of galaxies provided the raw materials to form a bright and powerful quasar obscured by dust in the early universe, according to a new image analysis. This analysis, centered on the most luminous galaxy known, also reveals how very bright galaxies can simultaneously feed supermassive black holes at their center and also hide them with dust.
The brightest galaxies of the early Universe harbor supermassive black holes in their centers. When the material falls into the central black holes of these young galaxies, it releases energy and is observable as a quasar.
Astronomers had previously identified a population of powerful distant quasars obscured by dust, but their formation had not been clarified. These extremely bright objects are quite unusual and are a challenge to current models of galaxy evolution and formation. On this occasion, Tanio Díaz Santos et al. analyzed one of these quasars darkened by dust using the Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope.
Using ALMA, they observed the quasar darkened by dust known as WISE J224607.57? 052635.0 at submillimeter wavelengths. Their analyzes, including dust emissions, revealed three small companion galaxies connected to the quasar by gas and dust bridges. Other studies revealed dynamic interactions between the companion galaxies and the bright central quasar.
From their findings, the researchers deduce that the accumulation of neighboring galaxies generated by the fusion is a catalytic mechanism, capable not only of providing the raw material to feed a hyperluminous quasar, but also of providing large amounts of dust to obscure it. (Source: AAAS)
