"I just saw him in the corner of my eye and I heard a shot, I focused on him and saw him hold a gun and continue to shoot the girl at the reception," said Knapp, 19. He told Reuters TV.

It was sometime after 11 p.m. PST on Wednesday night when Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former marine, entered the Western-themed bar at "College Country Night" and fired one round after another, seemingly at random, from his Glock caliber pistol. 45 equipped with a large capacity magazine.

Knapp, a student at nearby Moorpark College, crouched behind a pool table with some other people, he said, even as some customers continued to dance in a row, apparently unaware of the gunfire around them.

He ran to an exit to a smoke-filled courtyard, full of more people who had not heard the shots over the loud music "and told them to get over that fence and just run."

A SWAT team from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department arrived in a matter of minutes, along with the FBI and other officers to find the bar full of corpses, survivors huddled in terror and others desperately trying to get out.

"They found people hiding in the bathrooms, people hiding in attics," said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. Other witnesses described people who used stools to break windows and escape.

Alexis Tait, 23, said she heard how the firecrackers sounded when she saw her friend Kristina Kaylee Morisette fall to the floor, one of a dozen people who killed the gunman.

Tait, who says he is a regular at the bar, saw people huddled by a mirror and a window and fled there.

"We were all bodies on top of each other and, as soon as we saw him (the shooter) walking ... to the other side of the bar, they all ran as fast as they could to get out," said Tait.

Tait said he also saw people break windows with stools and jump.

"We all just trampled and tried to get out," said Tait. "Everything we could think was like we had to leave."
