& # 039; One hell of a night & # 039;: Derrick Rose savors his personal record of 50

During the regular season 2017-18, Derrick Rose did not score 50 points in all of January.

Or February.

Or March.

Or April.

I was suffering, always in and out of alignment, never in rhythm. Those problems, all his years of trouble, seemed so long ago Wednesday night, when Rose was better than ever, ending with a record 50 points that lifted the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Utah Jazz 125-122.

"I played my heart," Rose said. "My teammates told me before the game, they just play my game, and tonight was a tremendous night."

That was, for every possible measure.

Rose became the fourth player already this season, barely two weeks old, to score at least 50 in a game, joining Blake Griffin, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

And if the 50 were not enough, Rose sealed the victory by blocking the triple of Dante Exum with about two seconds remaining.

Moments later, Rose left the apartment crying. The game had made the 2011 NBA MVP cry before. Only this time, the emotion was all joy.

"I know the person he is, the character he has," said Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau. "And it shines through."

Rose had to deal with four knee surgeries, necessary to take a break last season to solve problems while facing ankle problems, she was forced to stay out almost two full seasons when she should have been at her best.

A night like this showed what is still possible.

"In every story, there is a beginning, a middle and an end," Thibodeau said. "And I think the end will be great for him."

Rose tried to play calmly afterwards, then acknowledged that he was still "nervous as hell", and that was about an hour after the game.

"It means everything," Rose said.

The Wolves assaulted Rose on the ground when she finished. They sprayed it with water in the locker room. And around the league, players could not wait to show their love.

"What he gives his mind and body just to play a game is something I saw as his teammate," said LeBron James, who played with Rose in Cleveland last season. "When you talk about perseverance, that's the true definition of that ... Even when a superhero is knocked down, at the end of the day he's still a superhero, and Derrick showed why he's a superhero."

"All basketball fans in the world should feel good about DRose," wrote Miami guard Dwyane Wade, also Rose's teammate in Cleveland. "Tonite was an example of never giving up and when others believe in you, amazing things can happen, I smile like I scored 50! Congratulations to a good guy!"

The Houston star, Chris Paul, intervened, as did the great Bulls player, Scottie Pippen.

"Hard work is unbeaten," wrote CJ McCollum of Portland.

An outburst like this seemed, at best, unlikely for Rose, considering that she had not even surpassed 35 points in any game since that MVP season.

Thibodeau trained Rose in Chicago and has seen him in all his splendor. He knows the adversity, the struggle, everything that Rose has gone through most of the last decade.

"The only thing that really matters to him is that he wins," Thibodeau said.

It has already been a rocky season for the Wolves, who have been dealing with Jimmy Butler's saga since before the camp. Butler did not play on Wednesday, with the team calling rest for the necessary rest. Butler requested an exchange before the season, but remains on the list.

None of that seemed to be in anyone's mind when the last horn against Jazz sounded. Rose was all that mattered.

And one night like this, he said, it was worth the wait.

"Everything is coming together," said Rose. "But it took six, seven years."
