& # 039; Cool to vote & # 039;: the Hollywood election telethon aims to take young people to the polls
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood celebrities will make an effort next week to urge young people to the polls in Tuesday's election in the United States, when control of Congress and many state governors are at stake.
In a one-of-a-kind event, more than 50 actors, comedians and YouTube stars will join a two-hour live telethon on Monday night aimed at encouraging younger voters, the age group less likely to cast a vote. .
The stars will not ask for money during the "Telethon for the United States". Instead, they will urge viewers to call a celebrity phone bank and commit to voting the next day.
Comedian Chelsea Handler, who left his Netflix (NFLX.O) The talk show a year ago to focus on activism, said he believes that young people expect that "older and more responsible adults" act to solve problems through the government.
"They just think that someone else is going to take care of that, it's not their problem and they may not be directly affected by it," Handler, 43, said in an interview.
Participation in intermediate elections is traditionally lower than in presidential elections. Reuters / Ipsos Survey bit.ly/2yNqop7 found that in October only 25 percent of people aged 18 to 29 said they were safe to vote in elections, the lowest percentage of any age group.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt on Friday added their voices to the campaign to get out of the vote.

"This election could be the most important of our lives," DiCaprio said in a video message with Pitt posted on social networks, mentioning issues such as gun control, the environment and immigration, without reference to any political party.
While the organizers of Monday's event say it is a nonpartisan effort, increased participation among young voters could help Democrats. Forty percent of people in that age group identified themselves as Democrats, while 22 percent called themselves Republicans.
Jane Fonda, Charlize Theron, Judd Apatow and others will participate in the telethon. Created by comedian Ben Gleib, the telethon will be broadcast live from a YouTube production space outside of Los Angeles on YouTube (GOOGL.O), Facebook Live (FB.O) and Comedy Central's (VIAB.O) website.
The spectators will receive information about how and where to vote in the elections.
The elections, widely regarded as a referendum on Republican President Donald Trump, represent an opportunity for Democrats to break control of their party in Congress. Opinion polls show Democrats a good chance of getting the 23 net seats they need to get a majority in the House of Representatives, but only a small chance of regaining the Senate.
The telethon could add a boost to a trend that is already underway: this year there has been a sudden increase in the voting of young voters. Initial estimates based on survey responses, voter registration and other data show huge increases in early voter turnout from 18 to 29 compared to the last midterm elections in 2014.

NO JABS IN TRUMP
While Hollywood is known to endorse liberal causes, and many celebrities are fierce critics of Trump, organizers said the telethon does not support any party.
Handler, a registered independent who supports the Democrats in this election, said he will not attack Trump during the event.
"It's about unification," Handler said. "It's about encouraging everyone to vote. Listen, I want the Republicans to vote too. "
The telethon is backed by When We All Vote, a non-partisan campaign launched by former first lady Michelle Obama to encourage voting.
It is unclear how much celebrities influence the vote, but there is evidence of influence in some cases. The Vote.org website said 413,000 new registered voters in the first four days after pop superstar Taylor Swift in early October urged fans to register, compared to 190,000 in September.
Fonda, who is 80 years old and was famous in her youth for her activism against the Vietnam War, said she hopes the young people will recognize what is at stake.
"More than any other election that I can remember, this particular election will determine if we can continue to call ourselves democracy, if we are going to be able to live in a country of people who are different from each other and really get along and love each other," he said. Reuters
"For young people, when you reach the end of your life, you want to be able to tell yourself that I did everything I could, when it really mattered that I was there," he added. "They do not understand that, but I'm older and I can say it's true."
Handler said he will encourage people to make a plan to vote and bring friends and make it fun.
"We just have to make people become part of the great kids," he added. "It's great to vote."
