Young biologists present a project to prevent the onset of metastasis
Promega Biotech Ibérica has decided to support an innovative project of a group of students of Human Biology and Biomedical Engineering of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and of Telecommunications Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) (Catalunya, Spain) with which They intend to demonstrate the close relationship that exists between the start of a metastasis and palmitic acid.
Promega responds well to the campaign that these young researchers started to finance the project through the Fundación Goteo sponsorship platform. It will be the first private company to support them economically as well as to provide them with laboratory material and advanced technology.
The project will choose next week to the prizes that each year grants the iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine), the biggest showcase at international level of researchers in Synthetic Biology that is celebrated annually in the American city of Boston.
In addition to the role played by palmitic acid in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, its possible involvement in cancer has recently been described, since it acts as a main energy source for tumor cells in the triggering of metastasis. In this sense, the project has the main objective of designing a genetically modified bacterium optimizing its metabolism of long chain fatty acids such as palmitic acid so that its absorption is as effective as possible.
This bacterium would compete with the intestinal absorption of palmitic acid, reducing to the maximum its levels of blood plasma concentration after ingestion. This project, in short, seeks to create a probiotic for patients with a tumor, as a preventive treatment of metastasis.
The team also has the support of Promega Biootech Iberica, both with the Department of Experimental Sciences and Health and the Department of Information Technology and Communications of the Pompeu Fabra University, and the Center for Genomic Regulation. (Source: Promega)
