NASA wants to pump large amounts of water into the Yellowstone supervolcano to cool it down. But this could also trigger a great catastrophe, which would plunge the whole world into chaos.

NASA wants to drill 10 km down in the Supervolcano

At first glance, NASA's plan does not sound so bad: Huge amounts of water must be pumped into Yellowstone's supervolcano to cool it down and delay a possible eruption as much as possible. At the same time, electricity could be generated from the resulting water vapor. However, there is a big problem: under certain circumstances, this measure can even cause the supervolcano to erupt prematurely and plunge the northern hemisphere into a nuclear winter.

Yellowstone could become a geothermal facility

Brian Wilcox, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told the BBC that the US space agency planned to "drill up to 10 km in the supervolcano and pump the water at high pressure," which would remove the heat slowly. He noted that although the cost of this project is estimated at $ 3.46 billion, it could also be an interesting investment opportunity, since the volcano, which currently emits around 6 gigawatts of heat, can essentially be converted into a huge geothermal installation. It could supply electricity at extremely competitive prices of around $ 0.10 per kWh.

Brian Wilcox

"I would have to give incentives to geothermal companies to drill a little bit more and use hotter water than they normally would, but it would pay for their initial investment and get electricity that can feed the surrounding area for a period of potentially tens of thousands AND the long-term benefit is that it prevents a future supervolcano eruption that would devastate humanity "

NASA project could cause volcanic winter

However, the scientist warns that even a small mistake could lead to the supervolcano's eruption, in other words, what geologists are trying to prevent from happening. The BBC notes that a supervolcano eruption could trigger a "prolonged winter volcanic", with the consequent failure of the harvest that puts humanity on the brink of hunger, since "food reserves worldwide will last 74 days."

NASA's plans are, literally, a game with fire. Only then does not only affect the Northwest of North America, but in particular the entire Northern Hemisphere and, consequently, even the entire world.
