The issue of the roles of women in the church is complicated and emotionally charged. These comments are only a brief synopsis of some of the topics. As elders, we affirm the rationale, purposes and affirmations of the Danvers Declaration (see below, or go to: www.cbmw.org / ...). Below are some specific questions and our understanding of how the Scriptures are applied to each. Our goal is to honor God and His Word, while avoiding a legalistic approach and a commitment to worldly influences that threaten to undermine the immutable truth of God.
1. Can women serve as elders or pastors over men?
The clear biblical answer is, No. See 1 Tim. 3: 1-7; Titus 1: 5-9 (Qualifications for the elderly, which are clearly framed with the men in view: "husband of a wife," "manage your home well," etc.). As well, 1 Cor. 11: 3-16 clearly presents the hierarchy: God, Christ, man, woman, which applies both to the church and to the home. Since elders / pastors teach and exercise authority, 1 Tim. 2: 11-15 prohibits women from holding this position (the reasons given in that text are not culturally determined). There are no NT examples of older women or pastors serving above men.
2. Can women serve as deacons, especially if their service area puts them above men?
Clearly, deacons serve the elderly. If the elders are men, then the men are finally in authority. 1 Tim. 3:11 is ambiguous: Does it refer to the wives of the elders, the wives of the deacons or the women deacons? We can not be dogmatic, but in light of ROM 16: 1 (Phoebe, a "deacon" [servant] of the church), it seems permissible for women to serve as deacons. It would seem that, in general, it is better to have female deacons in the ministries where they lead other women. If they serve on men, if questions arise that require authority, they should be deferred to the elders about the deacon.
In our thinking, this implies a position of corporate leadership that must be reserved for men when men are present (1 Cor. eleven).
Hello, I'm new to post. But I've been reading here for years. but I read a post today, I finally got ready enough to publish something and this is what I decided to publish first. I was looking for writings to comment on in another post before I found this. Jesus says, take the board out of your own eye. Do not scare people with fire and brimstone and the end times. Forgive and forget. the amount of judgment he gives to others will be the same amount that the Lord will grant him.

This article is the affirmation of the pastor and elders of Flagstaff Christian Fellowship, Flagstaff Arizona, regarding the roles of women in the church. Concludes with the Council's Danvers statement on the virility and status of women (CBMW, Wheaton, Illinois 1988).
