James "Whitey" Bulger, the famous boss of the Boston Mafia and only once Informant of the fbiThey died Tuesday after being found unresponsive in a federal prison in West Virginia, authorities said.



Life-saving measures were initiated at Bulger, 89, after it was found at 8:20 a.m. at Hazelton High Security Federal Prison in Bruceton Mills.



There was no immediate information about the cause of death, but a statement from the US Department of Justice noted that "no staff member or other inmates were injured, and at no time was the public in danger."



Bulger died a day after being transferred to Hazelton prison. Until recently, he had been serving his life sentence in a federal prison in Sumterville, Florida.



Bulger was convicted in 2013 of murdering 11 people, as well as extortion, money laundering and weapons charges.

The trial came almost 20 years after he fled after a corrupt FBI agent accused him of a pending federal indictment.



He spent 16 years on the street and He was arrested in 2011 in santa monica, california.
